- Q:I am trying to install a new smoke alarm inside a room of my house, but when I attach it to the wires in the ceiling it sets off all of the other smoke alarms in my house until I detach it. Is this supposed to happen (in which case is there a way that I can silence them all at once or do I have to silence each one individually), or what can I do so that this doesn't happen?
- The difference between sch 80 and sch 20 is thickness. On the pipe the outside diameter is the same the wall thickness is what changes same on fittings. So yes they will work the fittings will just be thinner walled tha the pipe. This link will give you pipe dimensions. Good Luck

- In theory by adding a valve to the system you may have added a small extra length to your system. That could cause a very, very small change in the flow rate from what you might have without the valve. Having said that, you shouldn't see a flow rate change that you can detect. In any system when you make a change you have to look at pipe length, diameter, added pressure drop from things like valves and fittings. You have to be careful about valves because many are not full port valves. The type of valve can also be a consideration. The pressure drop in a full size globe valve even if it is fully open is much greater than a ball valve fully open. You also have to look at the pressure source. What happens to the pressure source when there is a change in flow rate or what happens to the flow rate when there is a change in the pressure source.

- If you only need to stop the drip in order to solder the repair. stuff some ordinary bread into the pipe to temporarily stop the dripping. If you work fast, you will have enough time to solder the new piece on and the water will desolve the bread when you turn the water back on. Trmove the strainer on your kitchen spout before running the water so that any clumps of bread left don't clog it up. If that doesn't work or the drip is too heavy, use compression fittings for the repair.

In Australia this is a free service they seem to love to do, and for seniors they will move it for you; for hard of hearing people they will make sure you have one you can hear without your hearing aids.

- I'm not a huge fan of sharkbite fittings especially in an enclosed place where they could leak without anyone noticing for a while. However, I can't see anything wrong with the setup you have. Yes of course brass is more expensive than plastic and better. Seems like maybe your handyman wants you to think he is smarter than he really is. I would suggest adding a wood block between the studs behind the valve and attaching the valve to it with plumbers strap. that way it cant wiggle around with use and cause leaks later.
