Q:I just bought a quot;shrink window plastic insulation kitquot; from Home Depot to prevent cold air from entering through the windows. The plastic comes wrapped and it's taking forever to unwrap the plastic pieces that are stuck together. Please help!!!!
I just did the same to my windows today and the best way is unfold the entire roll on the ground. It is easier to separate the film making it easier to open. ONE HUGE HINT!! When applying the double sided tape make sure that you undo at least an inch of both sides of the tape before you apply to the wall. It makes it easier to undo the second strip of the double sided tape. I hope this helps.
Q:Can you get an electrick sock when you slum the door of your car and touching the rubber/plastic where the window holds on to? isn't plastic an islulator?
i would love an electric sock
Q:I tried cleaning my plastic windows in my truck with water thinking if i wiped it up right away it wouldn't leave any spots but it did... I'm not trying to buy anything expensive and I was under the impression you don't use windex on plastic... Any ideas?
just use the window cleaner that you put in cars, i use this al the time, i buy a gallon of the cleaner, pour some of it out and add a bottle of rubbing alcohol in it.
Q:I'm thinking of buying wool army blankets for every window. Is that the warmest and cheapest thing?Plastic may plug up drafts, but it has never kept the house warm.
That might be a good solution, if you have a place to buy them at a good price. I usually put up a heavier curtain or drapery in the cold weather. I like to be able to open them when the sun is coming in. I also close the blinds in the evening. I don't think the plastic works all that well either. Good luck keeping warm!
Q:And then you use a hair dryer on it and it shrinks the plastic?Does that work for all plastic? Will all plastic shrink? Or are the ones in the store a 'special' type of plastic?
Not all plastic shrink. The window kits you refer to are specially designed to shrink. There are also craft plastic designed to shrink suck as shrink a dinks a crafty kit for making all kinds of interesting toys and gadgets.
Q:I saw an online video that we can go to our local home depot etc and buy kits where we use a blow drying and put plastic on the inside of our windows. How much does this really help in saving on energy costs for those of you who know this kind of stuff. I am on a very limited budget, so I am looking at those,
Couldn't have afforded winter in MI with out them! We lived in a 100 year old farm house, on a budget. We used plastic on all the windows and heated the whole house with the wood stove. The wood was free,(we cut and chopped it ourselves) and we only spent about 30 bucks on the plastic. Now that we live in NC, we still cover the windows, but we have electric heat now. I miss the wood stove!
Q:what do i do to make the plastic thats supposed to keep the chill out on the windows stay on. it keeps falling down? i followed the directions. now what?
How is the plastic attached? What is it attached to? Are trouble shooting ideas available? I've had problems with the window flashing's sweating, causing the tape and/or adhesive to fail. Try attaching the plastic to wooden strips and inserting the framed plastic in the window area. Another option is a staple gun, however, that can create problems of a different nature. Try contacting your local hardware store for ideas, suggestions and possibly solutions offered by other customers.
Q:Can anyone help with a cleaning agent that i could use on the windows to bring them up good, and what should i use on the outside to clean it also
My guess would be vinegar and water. No glass cleaner.
Q:Looking for an actual number, not a quot;go call the builderquot; response. I already did that. Still looking for an actual savings amount though. Anybody do this and can give an example of energy savings?
How leaky are your windows? How many panes? Is there insulation around your windows? Are they caulked properly? What is the normal temperature outside? This is not something anyone can throw a number at you that makes any sense. There are to many contributing factors to come up with a savings number. Suffice to say if there is cold radiating in from the window - or heat in the summer your bill can only benefit from sealing them. The heat shrink plastic adds another thermal layer. It's like putting on a sweater under your coat if it's really cold. I live in Winnipeg Canada. In the dead of winter -40F is not uncommon. In this old house most of our windows are triple pane. The ones that are not actually get a layer of ice on the inside. We plastic those and plan to replace them.
Q:i am doing this investigatory project about different kinds of windows and im testing the difference between glass and plastic windows and i found that plastic windows make the room hotter than glass windows. Why is this so? what is in both these materials that causes this result? what are they made of and what contributes to this result? please help me. i need this by tomorrow!!!:(
It has to do with how well the material conducts energy. Plastic is probably a better insulator which means it does not transfer energy well. Glass is also an insulator but maybe it isn't as good of an insulator. Try doing more research on the conductive/heat transfer properties of glass vs. plastic.
