- Q:I rent a townhouse that has very old windows.. LL will not replace them so im thinking of puttng plastic over the wndows.. we are not aloud to put plastic outside.,. - If you where one of my Dad's kids, this is exactly what he would tell you to do. Go To the Hardware Store ,get some Window Weatherproofing Clear Sheets. Those are made and supplied to the stores by Maclainberg Duncan,or MD company.You just put the clear sheets onto the glass and using a blow dryer,they shrink to make an exact fit. Very effective. - Do you mean like the ones where you pull them down and they unroll, and then to open them back up you pull down slightly and push them back up? I have those and I got them at the Home Depot. You can special order them in whatever size you want. And, they're fairly inexpensive. I have them on two picture windows with a southwest exposure, one about 6 feet long and the other about 7 feet long. I also have 2-inch horizontal mini blinds on those windows. But, the blinds are so long and heavy that they don't completely close all the way. So, I had to install the roll-up blinds behind them. And, they work great.

- I have found using a product called Mean Green does a lovely job on the new vinyl windows. I use it on mine and found it great. I smoke and the place we live leaves road crud on them on the outside. This handles it great. Any good department store carries it, spray it on use warm water to wash off and rinse. Good to go.

I have been tearing the plastic windows out of envelopes (you know the kind you get from businesses) before sticking them into the paper bin. Do I even have to do this? And if I do, can I put the plastic window part I rip out into the plastic recycling bin?
- Generally, recycling authorities will tell you stuff like this if its important. I would just put the whole envelope in the paper recycling. My authority (Edinburgh) doesn't accept envelopes at all, though, because of the glue!
