Q: Could I use red diesel in a diesel generator legally in the UK? Can I add vegetable oil to this and if so, in what ratio? Where are good sources of vegetable oil?
Red diesel is agricultural, no tax or tax reduced. The Red is only a dye to distinguish it from tax paid diesel. However using it illegally can result in very hefty fines if caught. Used and cleaned vegetable oil can be mixed with diesel, actual proportions I'm not sure of, but I think 3:1 oil to diesel. There are probably sites that explain in more detail. However why it has to be used veg. oil I don't know.
Q: An internal combustion engine runs more efficiently at constant speed. If it was run to charge the batteries when needed, via a generator, it seems to me it would be much more efficient than today's dual mode hybrids. This is essentially what diesel-electric locomotives do, and they get much better gas mileage than cars.
My understanding is that this IS how some hybrids work. At low levels of acceleration, the battery provides most of the work. It is when the car accelerates hard that the switch is made to use the gasoline engine. It is depends on whether the hybrid has a series or parallel configuration. The hybrids key nitch is stop-and-go traffic. Without it, there are other compact cars that get better gas mileage. The electro-resistive braking is one of the best features of hybrids, because it takes kinetic energy and converts it to electro-potential energy. That means in light acceleration and light breaking traffic, a driver would use far less energy. The engine in Toyota and some Honda hybrids are essentially high-end, high-efficiency generator engines. Engine acceleration is smooth (efficient) as the battery provides a good chunk of the energy in the beginning of the acceleration. Then the computer evaluates current draw, reserves, and current acceleration to set the engine speed. If you suddenly take your foot off the accelerator, the engine slowly revs down, sending the suddenly excess power to the battery. Because of the large battery bank and computer management, hybrids are actually far more efficient for variable demand situations than a standard generator. I don't know much about diesel-electric trains, but diesel is almost always the better bet for mostly constant-rate driving, and gasoline is the best bet for highly variable-rate driving. I can see a line of logic for a bio-diesel hybrid car with a significant battery pack to further smooth out the highs and lows. The link below might help you out.

You are after capacity of the generator not load. You add up all the power required: 240 HP + 300 HP + 675 HP 1215 HP 1 HP 746 W Power required 906.39 kW You take this figure in consideration to choose your set allowing for efficiency and power factor.
Q: For over a year, about once a month I start this Jeep and run it about 10 minutes. Zero problems until yesterday. It has fresh gasoline just added, cranks over fine, has spark (I have a spark tester) but will not 'pop' over. Upon closer inspection I see it has at least 6 Bosch type relays under the hood and know if one sticks something will not turn on. Within the USA the national electrical code for wall outlets call for using 12 gauge wire and a 20 amp breaker and a 20 amp outlet. They have to be sized together like this. If you are using heavy duty equipment that draws a lot of amps then only have 1 outlet on that circuit. You really should consult a local electrician on this.

It's difficult to guess at exact ratings based solely on a picture. Check the generator housing for its specification plate. You can sometimes ballpark a rating based on the engine size. For each horsepower the system should be capable of producing approximately 500 watts. A 8HP engine is usually connected to a 4000 watt generator, 10HP for 5000W, 14HP for 7000W, etc. Many generators have two coils to supply AC output. For 120VAC output only the two coils are placed in parallel. For 120/240VAC the coils are wired in series and mid connection becomes the neutral. If the generator is presently capable of supplying 1kW, changing the output to supply 240VAC will still supply a maximum of 1kW. The maximum each output coil will supply at 120VAC is 500W. You need to separate the two output coils and wire them in series. Install a proper 240VAC outlet on the generator. The circuit breaker should be reduced to half of its present current rating. It's best to connect them at the crank so that they can be timed to fire in a manner that your getting the most amount of power you can. This has been done in applications as small as a .12cc engine all the way up to huge engines that power large ships. The most common place I used to see it is with gas engines for tractor pull. The engines do sync up and will run together when you pair them up thru a clutch
