- Q: We are planning small home improvements during the next year to prepare our house for sale. I would like to switch out our 4 year old formica countertop and replace it with granite tile. A slab is out of the question due to cost. We have a small kitchen and would need about 40 tiles. When I looked on the internet for costs, it seems I can get these tiles for under $300.00? Does that sound right, I think that‘s less than what we paid for the Formica. Also, my next question is can you use the same tile for the entryway, which is next to the kitchen, or it that a little too much of the same thing?
- The tile will be cheaper, using a slab is always more expensive. Remember that the tile doesn't include the installation cost either. You can use it in the entryway just remember that granite is very slippery when used as flooring and caution must be taken. To get the best look out of granite tile for the countertop ensure that they are laid with very little grout space. Ensure you hire a good experienced tile setter one that has laid granite tile. You want them to ensure that the edges all have the finished edge. This will give you the best look, it's really not a big deal for an experienced installer. Don't use a wood edge and go for the tile, it will last longer and increase the value of your home more than formica. You can often find bullnose edge pieces to lay with your tile unless you are buying a rare granite.

- The trowel is used to spread the thinset, and even it out to a uniform thickness.

- Q: why is waterproofing done before grouting?why do we need to let the mortar/adhesive dry before grouting?
- Water proofing is done before any tile is set into place.. Water proofing must be done on any horizontal surface in water prone areas such as showers. Not always done out side the shower area, but each case is different. You should allow the bonding material to dry before grouting so the bonding agent, mastic (walls in a non wet area )or a thin set won t bleed through and stain the grout. The only way to ensure of a good bond is to lift tiles during the setting process and make sure you have proper amount of mastic ( walls in a non wet area) or thin set under the tiles.. There are ways to check floor tiles to ensure a bond is to knock on the tiles to see if they sound solid. Hollow sound gives way to a no bond. - Q: I purchased a house that came with a pool. The drawback is that tile is covering the outside of the pool which makes it extremely slippery for my family and guests. What a good solution to this challenge? Lastly, what‘s going to be the best and cheapest alternative to this? Someone mentioned to me that the rubbery mats they use at restaurants works very well, but I need to know the best and cheapest alternative.Suggestions?
- If your swimming pool area has not been treated it probably is a liability because untreated areas are slippery. The risk increases dramatically when the tiles are wet and that’s when slip and fall accidents happen. Many accidents are happening on a daily basis where adults and children are falling as a result of slippery, wet surfaces that are being walked on. Swimming pools should be a fun place but this has to be balanced with safety. Whether you are an adult or a child there is significant danger associated with tiling around pools!
- Q: I bought tile effect laminate flooring for my kitchen. How do I stagger the joints, but line the grout seems up at the same time? There are four equal tiles per a plank.
- The tiles should be the same size or in a pattern such that you can off set the joints and still have the tilegrout lines still line up. Or some of them you can both off set the joints and do a offset or brick pattern in the laminate itself. This type of laminate you ll need more than normal scrap because you will scrap more out on this type of laminate. - Q: Wondered what people‘s experiences were of the above in kitchens. The kitchen leads out into the back garden so the floor will be walked on an awful lot. Would flooring last or look as good after a year or would tiles be the way to go. Any info would be great before I make a purchase.Thanks
- Tile would be your best choice since it's almost indestructible, especially because of the garden entrance and the traffic pattern. Although wood floors are gorgeous, they won't stand up to spills, scratching, and traffic like tile does, particularly in the kitchen. If you do opt for tile though, use porcelain or natural stone rather than ceramic since ceramic can pit and chip. If you choose natural stone, make sure that it's sealed since it's porous and may stain or become watermarked.
