- Q: We want to put up kitchen tile for our back splash. I would like to put the squares on diagonally but my husband is concerned about the difficulty of all of the cuts. I need some DYI help. Please only serious replies, no jokesters
- Not totally sure what you are asking. I have applied square tiles in a diamond pattern. Be sure to get a wet tile saw to cut the tiles diagonally in half, as this will do a much neater job and make things easy for you. It really wasn't that difficult, lay out your pattern on the floor to get an idea how many cuts you need to make. Use those plastic spacers to ensure uniform spacings between tiles and then just have fun with it. It was a project that I enjoyed and it brought instant enhancements to the kitchen.
- Q: My husband and I bought a house where most of the rooms (kitchen, dining room, entertainment room, den, and laundry room) are all tiled with these Terra cotta like tiles. They are a southern type rusty red and stain easily. My husband loves the tiles and wants to keep them. He‘s concented on changing the color if I want though, as long as I keep the origional tile. I‘m trying to make the house look a bit more elegant/country (Blues, silvers, whites, golds, dark greens, etc. Elegant and formal but still bright and airy) While keeping the tile, is there any way to stain it another color and do some kind of glossy seal? What color might keep that feel? What kind of products work best?
- I wouldn't bother doing it. You could get a sealer the seal the tile because I think I remember my dad saying Terra Cotta tiles are very porous. But I don't think that trying to put paint or changing its color would give you satisfactory results.
- Q: This is what I need some information on. I decided to put some floor tile in front of my door in my living room where some carpet is. So what size should I cut out of the carpet where I‘m going to put the tile ? If you have any advice how I should go about this just let me know. You no something like the dos as well as the don‘ts
- Well the size is really up to you, I would probably keep it in a neat rectangle or square though, only as wide as the door is, but that's hardly a requirement. What kind of tile is it though, cause the installation will vary greatly depending on that. Need a bit more info =)

- Q: Can you give me your opinion? White beveled subway tiles with dark gray marble floors, or mahogany brown large rectangular floors with matching size walls in beige tile? I was thinking of adding a glass border for accent, the tile store lady told me to put it up high, one right below the last cut of tiles as opposed to between the faucet and mirror. Do I still stick with the white toilets and bathtub? PLEASE help!Thanks
- Hi Mrs K, I would choose as you said, White Subway tile. But, I would choose Light Grey for floor tile. With a very light color grey grout as well. I agree to add the glass accent tile above within the white subway tile. I would choose the white toilet and bathtub. Any other colors that you choose are easy to match with this color scheme ( lilac or green towels are a thought that look great with the white grey combo). Over the years, all your accessories can be easily matched and changed cost effectively.

- Your best answer will be on the tile boxes or on the bags of thinset. Generally you need a 1' subfloor, 1 1/4 being better. Most tile setters like small grout lines with this type of tile using toothpicks as spacers. Using the latex admix will help with expansion and contraction cracking. Keep the installation area well above freezing before, during and until cured, also do not let it get excessively low in humidity, as this will cause cracking from drying too fast. Always work your way out of an area, to avoid walking on freshly laid tile. Every so often pick up a just laid tile and check for 90%+ coverage of adhesive. Try to avoid getting any thinset on the face of the tile, as it may stain it. Use non sanded grout. If you have any specific questions, email me
- Q: in the process of shopping i am coming across made in china flooring tiles, are these products durable, are they reliable, will there be a quaility issue with long term use? can anyone recommend a tile that is manufactered in the U.S.? there are so many different tiles on the market it is hard to choose, should we even be using a porcelean tile, what about vinyl sheet goods? this is a bathroom application..5‘ wide 7‘ deep
- Several types of tile are made in the US. Some include Florida Tile, American Olean some Laufen tile are made here. You don t necessarily need a 12x12 , you may want to consider a smaller tile in that space. Even some of the makers listed above import the tile from Turkey, China, Italy etc. Over the years I haven t done much China made tile so I can t honestly comment on that. Almost any tile made ( almost) will be fine in a residential bathroom setting. Porcelain tiles are fine but normal ceramics will also work well. Vinyl sheet goods will also work fine in a bathroom. They come in 6 and 12 ft goods, so a 6x7 foot pc will work excellent for you since you won t scrap out much and you ll be seamless. - Q: I installed tile couple of days ago in my shower. I was wondering isn't it better to put bathroom caulking instead of grout since it is flexible and it will last longer and provide better water resistance. Does grout make tile stronger or is caulking only applied on edges? Would I make mistake if I used bathroom caulking between tiles? Thanks

- Q: I just finished grouting my tile yesterday I want to remove the haze with vinager should I let the grout cure for three days,then seal it and then scrub the whole floor including going over the grout lines (which would be then sealed) scrubbing with a sponge and avoiding the non cured grout is working but is taking far too long
- Clear water should work. You're supposed to get all that off before you leave it to dry. Do seal it after the curing process. Even dark grouts get dirty. Sealing helps a lot.
- Q: can you tile an old brick fireplacegt;?would it look stupid?
- To do that it is a bit more complicated than it sounds. You would need to make the brick surface smooth, no crevaces. It's expensive time consuming. Consider resurfacing the fireplace
