Q: My kitchen has a white ceramic tile floor. It never looks clean, every speck of dirt shows. Because we live in a slab home, the tiles are glued right to the concrete. I hate to think how much work it would be to remove them. I could tile over - but it would make the kitchen floor higher than the surrounding rooms. Is there any suitable product for changing the color of the tile in such a high traffic area?: There is no GOOD way to do this. And you are right in that tiling over tile is a bad idea. You could go over it with a product like DuraCeramic, which would only raise the floor level up a small amount, but be aware that anything you put over that surface will likely make the existing surface unusable forevermore and you might regret it someday. The real solution would be to demo the existing tile and install new tile.

Q: We are going to replace the bathtub that came with our house, built in 1986, but we can not decide whether or not to just get a regular bath combination shower or just the bathtub and tile the shower walls...any suggestions or experience with this that anyone would be able to recommend either way?: What type of flooring is in the room? Q: I‘m tiling my bathroom shower and need to cut holes for the shower head and body sprayers. I‘m using porcelain tile and I‘m not having any luck cutting the holes. I‘ve bought a couple holes saw bits that say they are for porcelain, but they just don‘t seem to be doing the job. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.: I cut ,and you can too, all my porcelains and ceramic tile w/ a wet saw. I mark front and back w/ a permanent marker. I mark a 1 to a 1/1/4 hole . I make a square . Front of the tile I just score it good w/ a wet saw. In this case the smaller the blade the better. Then I flip the tile over and hold the tile w/ my arm w/ my fingers over the scored front holes. Then I plunge cut each side of the hole carefully. Just letting the blade come thru. It won t cut your fingers .. Once you have all 4 side cut, you can tap the hole out or carefully cut it more until it falls out. They also make a small dry saw that has a 4 blade that will work, since I ve also used mine 100 s of times this way too if my wet saw wasn t set up. Q: Which tile is best Porcelain or ceramic for a concrete floor?: Either will be fine for a residential setting. Installed properly both will last for years to come. Neither will break if installed properly if something is dropped on them. You can possible get top chips if a heavy object is dropped and both will show the inner body core unless you buy a true porcelain and not the average porcelain glazed tile. Unless you have major moisture problems tile can be used any time. Some moisture ( if any) will wick up and dissipate as normal. Q: standard shiny, white 4x4 tiles. I want to redo the bathroom stalls, but heard from some people that it could take forever, and that i might end up messing up the the drywall? to me it sounds simple... just get a spatula or something of the sort and scrape off the tiles... is that how it goes or is it more difficult than that? has anyone out there done this? what tools would i need? what type of tile cutter do you suggest? i‘d like to replace the tiles with something bigger... maybe 10x10 tiles?: It okorder /... You can also just nail the WonderBoard over the top of the greenboard, but you will need the bull-nose tile to finish the edges of the board. I looked closely and I believe that is how it is done in the picture that I posted. The cement board is on top of the greenboard instead of the greenboard being cut out. You need to let a tile professional do this for you. You could remove the old tile and let the professional do the backer and the new tiles. If you watch him work, you could learn how to do it yourself.

Q: I want to add a backsplash with a 4x4 ceramic tile. I only want to go up 1 or 2 tiles in height not the whole wall area. Edges of the tiles are not black for the unfinished ceramic. How do I make the edges look finished or black also?: put cap over the top row of tiles. the cap tiles are usually 2 inches high by 6 inches long and they go right on top of the top row of tiles.

Q: Suggestions and stories needed. We have 3 kids, 2 dogs (inside). I am on the fence. We bought stuff for doing the tile but now I am thinking laminate.: Both are good choices. Tile is more durable but its cold in the winter and harder on the feet. Laminate has a warmer feel and the pad gives it a little bit softer feel. Plus glass objects don't always break when you dop them on it. But it can be damaged a lot easier than tile. I am not saying its easily damaged, by no means, its very durable and will with stand 3 kids and 2 dogs. Laminate is also not recommended in high moister areas. As far as maintaining the floors, Laminate is easier just wipe it up a few times a month and your good to go. Tile needs the grout to be sealed and needs to be scrubbed when t gets real dirty.

Q: Dont worry about looks with the dollar tile just want to know pricing pretty much on the tile and how expensive it is.: If you are doing the tile work yourself, it will be cheaper than having one of those fiberglass shower enclosures put in. You are looking at the cost of tile (at $1/sqft.), grout ($10 or less), permabase/durock ($9 per 3x5 sheet), mastic ($30 for high quality), and caulk ($4), to get the job done. On an average size shower, this will bring your total material bill in at right around $200. This is based on entirely ripping out your old shower walls (back to the studs), and building an entirely new shower. A complete rennovation for $200. This is what I do for a living, and I can honestly tell you that you will save tons if you are handy enough to do this yourself. One side note on the pre-fab showers (fiberglass, urethane, etc) - we get a lot of calls to come out and remove mold from these types of enclosures. On most that I've seen there are a lot of corners and small nooks that moisture gathers up and sits in. Just something to watch out for should you go that method. Good luck to you, either way.
