Q:it'll probably be another week of them grinding the cement floor and cutting wood boards inside the house until all the wood is installed. there is wood and cement dust EVERYWHERE, and a lot of the downstairs is still just cement and the dust is on that too, so vaccuming/sweeping it isn't really an option, plus the fact that our furniture from the living room which they're laying the wood in now is all in the familyroom and kitchen and can't be moved to sweep underneath. there is a thick layer of dust on EVERYTHING, and we're also coughing from it. is there anything i can do to get rid of this dust without disturbing it with a duster? is there some sort of stuff i can spray that will dissolve the dust?
Vacuuming HAS to be an option if you're going to try to live with this situation. A good shop vac with adequate filtration for such a fine particulate as concrete dust is necessary, and should be used as frequently as necessary, and changed as it gets clogged up, to maintain habitability. You really don't want to be breathing this dust for extended periods. Wear good dust masks while you're in these spaces.
Q:the durock cement board is 1/2 inch and the drywall is 5/8 of an inch...So the shower wall is about an 1/8 of an inch recessed intothe wall. What can I do to fix the situation without redoing anymore walls. If I butt up the bullnose tile against the drywall about half of the tile's thickness sticks out...actually looks ok. I don't know if i should try to make a gradient from the drywall to the tile. There are also some gap between the two types of boards.....fill it with mortar?
Yes you float it and float it back a bit on the durock. Use the same thinset mortar that you use for the tile. Never use a mastic as some hackers may suggest.Mastic is a water soluble product and will fail in a wet area such as a shower. What I do if the area permits is to put a pc of painters tape on the edge of the dry wall. Leave room for cement board tape. Then float the ares and pull off the painters tape and run the SBN over the durock tape edge and onto the dry wall just a bit to cover all and make a clean transition. Any questions you can e mail me through my avatar and check my qualifications there. GL
Q:I plan on installing about 400 square feet of ceramic tile in a kitchen. I wanted to know if I need to put down a cement backer board before laying the tile?If so, how do I determine if I should use 1/4 inch or 1/2 inch? Finally, what is the preferred method of securing it to the subfloor? Is is it glued somehow or nailed to the floor joists (I suspect nailed, but I've never used it before). The subfloor is plywood and seems secure. I am not sure how thick the plywood is yet (haven't gone to the basement and looked for any stamps on it). I've done ceramic tile before, but it has always been a small area with mosaic tile, so I never put much thought into the backer board. Thanks
Advantages of using backerboard instead of wood is its ability to withstand moisture, steam, and other types of wetness common to rooms such as kitchens and bathrooms where ceramic tile is usually installed. The cement backer board can be screwed or nailed to the wood framing. Always follow the instructions printed by the manufacturer. I use hot-dipped ring-shanked nails if I am nailing. Corrosion-resistant screws can also be used
Q:We have drywall in our kitchen that was painted with a smooth semi-gloss paint a good 8 yrs ago. We'd like to install 3x6 tumbled marble as a backsplash over the drywall. It's about 1/4 thick so probably slightly heavier than say, the tiny square glass tiles that come on a 12x12 netting. One person at the Home Depot said we could just sand and scrape up the drywall and then apply the thinset and install the marble. Another said we might want to use a cement backing. We aren't really DIYers and would so we don't want to create extra work with the cement backing if it isn't needed. That said, we don't want the drywall to start peeling and the marble tiles to start falling off after a short amount of time. Please advise. Thank you!
I would recommend screwing wonder board over the drywall before putting the tile up. This will give you a long lasting application. It will not up your cost a whole lot and you will be much happier in the long run.
Q:I am installing a new tub and enclosure. I have exposed everything down to the studs and plumbing. I have heard that when installing backer board in a shower the best material to use nowadays is cement backer board (like Durock) since they are more resistant to mold than green board. Anyways, what is the correct process for installing cement backer board in a shower? Do I just screw the boards right into the studs, or do I have to first put down another thin barrier sheet (like some waterproof material), then the cement backer board, then another waterproof sealant, then I can install the enclosure? I just want to do this right the first time and not leave any steps out of the process. I would hate to develop another moisture leak and then find out that my barrier did not hold up well. Thanks and take care, I appreciate any help.
plastic on the studs, then Duroc [drill holes for screws] then seal it with cement sealer, then the enclosure,
Q:Can you use rubber cement on a science fair poster board to glue papers down?
Rubber cement will damage some plastics and polished surfaces. If that is not a problem, then it can form a strong yet flexible bond, so may be suitable for your purpose.
Q:i am wondering the durablability difference. Is one more sturdier than the other?
Some insurance company's do not write policy's for fiber cement homes. If there is water damage, for instance, behind the siding, it is not often discovered in time to have a small claim. The claims have been huge, in some cases. Also, I have seen this type of siding damaged by wood peckers.. The bird can detect an insect or larvae behind the siding and go after them leaving behind numerous holes.. In my opinion, stone veneer is almost as good as brick.
Q:A grade fireproof material cement board
High heat insulation NK-YB01 composite foam cement board closed porosity> 95%, high porosity so that the air flow caused by low heat transfer, is a prerequisite for high insulation. Therefore, the thermal conductivity of the external wall insulation board is (0.045-0.068) W / m.k, and the thermal conductivity of the polystyrene board is slightly lower, but the actual effect in the actual engineering is basically the same, which can meet the needs of building insulation and insulation.
Q:Can the Etch board be used for the bathroom?
Etch board belongs to fiber cement board. It is a fiber reinforced silicate plate (fiber cement board), the main raw material is cement, plant fiber and minerals, by the high temperature autoclave , Mainly for building materials. Ethe Group is a Belgian industrial group that manufactures and sells all kinds of high quality building materials and systems such as roofing materials, architectural trim panels, floor and wall materials, etc.
Q:When laying down cement backer board for a slate tile installation, I laid the board a bit too far from the wall, so I pushed it until it was flush with the wall. I think by doing this I must have shifted some of the thinset underneath, because I noticed that the board has a slight dip in it, of maybe 1/16-1/8. Is this going to be a problem, or will it be taken care of when I put thinset over it to lay the tile. This is obviously my first time laying tile.On a side note, when laying slate, is it best to use thinset or medium set, I've heard conflicting opinions.
If you use medium set, any differences in the scale you described can be corrected fairly nicely.
