Do you think we could get away will laying down cement board on top of the substrate floor without plywood for added strength?Thanks!: If you have any reservations about the strength of using just the compressed cement board, why not lay that compressed cement board on top of the ply that's there now and save the hassle of ripping it up and quell those doubts. As for using a mortar for leveling purposes, why wouldn't you just use a tiling compound to rectify the levels as your tiling. After all how bad could it be, as a carpenter I'd say the guy who built the sub-floor frame couldn't have been more than a few mils out, here of there. BTW the compressed cement board will easily take the load without the ply.

Q: What to use to fill gap between green wall board and cement board, and between cement boards around bath tub?: modified thin set. Let dry for 12 hours.

Q: how can I cut the cement backer board for tiles?knife? saw? (what blade?): For thinner backer board(under 1/2), use a utility knife. Score one side and then tap it from the back at the cut. For backer board over 1/2 it is best to use a Skill saw or a Jig saw. If you need to cut a hole, for around a toilet or something, drill a hole in the center of the area and then cut it out with a Jig saw. Pretty much any old saw blade will work fine, it cuts very easily and does make a bit of a mess. It's a good idea to use an adhesive (Liquid Nail) or thinset mortar underneath the backer board as well as screws/nails for the best job. Good luck with your project

Q: Can i tile over plywood floor, without using cement board?: No.... just plywood sub floor doesnt allow the proper support for ceramic. Total thickness must be a minimum or 1 1/4 substrate to allow for tile. This is why cement board (1/2) makes an ideal substrate for tile. There is a way to do an extra layer of wood (1/2) but this is a very specific process and must be done right to work.. Now if your doing a vinyl tile you can use a vinyl tile directly over a wood sub floor although a new thin wood (1/4) is suggested to allow the glue to adhere to new wood better.
