- Q:I bought a bathroom fan timer and tried to install it. It has four wires and the wall switch circuit has only 3 wires. What do I do?

- Q:We bought a used 2004 Chevy Venture that is a cargo style van... it only had a radio in it. So we just bought a Sony car stereo with a cd player to install in it. However, we are having trouble locating the correct wiring harness for the 2004 Venture. We've bought two already for GM vehicles that should technically work for the year of our van, but they do not work. One salesman told us we needed a very expensive wiring harness because it controls the airbags and other electrical gadgets (but they didn't sell it at his store... he said to look online). I've looked online and can't find anything. Would we be better hardwiring it OR does anyone have any experience with a situation like this? Thanks!

- This doesn't sound like an easy answer without seeing it. For instance, how long is the wire run; is it entirely outside (if so, then you'll need either conduit for the full run, or UF-B rated wire buried below the freeze line with conduit where it exits the ground to the Service Panel). Outside receptacles should also be GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) protected. A single pole 20amp breaker should be used for a 12/3 wire. Load wire (black) goes into the screw of the breaker; the neutral (white) wire screws into the neutral bus bar of the service panel (breaker box), and the bare ground wire screws into the ground bus bar. Since these wires are interchangeable, it really doesn't matter which side of the panel you hook the neutral and ground wire to. BE CAREFUL!!!!! The main bus bars can still be hot (charged) even with the power turned off. If you ground yourself and touch the wrong thing, you'll be wondering what went wrong from the great beyond. Get a basic electricity book from Home Depot, or look on youtube. If you're not 100% confident, please leave this to a professional.
- Q:u said when i buy a jvc wiring harness one end plugs in the back of cd player and the wires coming out of that connect to the wires in car will they be the same color though? right now there is a harness already on the cd player and the wires are on it and they are pretty long i thought i just wire those wires from it to the ones in car but they diff. colors
- Do you have a wiring diagram for your car? In there, they have the color codes for the speakers, dash illumination ( so when you change the lighting on your dash, your radio will change too), power attena, constant power for the clock and presets. If you don't have the diagram, check online for it. If you bought your deck from crutchfield, they include plugs that fit your car so you dont have to cut wires. Good lluck with it.
- Q:I am replacing old 3 button (vertically aligned) light switch. There is 1 thick wire wrapped in white, 1 thick wire wrapped in black and 4 thin wires wrapped in black. I attached the white wire to the common wire screw and put the remaining wires around the screws. I am also replacing a toggle switch that will control the vanity lights above the sink. There are 4 clumps of wire coming through the box. The copper grounds are all twisted together, and there are multiple strands of white covered wire twisted together and then the 5 black cover wires and 1 white covered wires. After hooking it all up, it doesn't do anything. No lights, fan or heat lamp. What did I do wrong?
- Jeff Verde nailed it but forgot one thing. Never assume that the last person that installed wiring hooked it up to the right colors! I've even seen people use a hot wire (Black) as the ground. Never assume it's right to start with!
- Q:I'm splicing four pieces of 14-2 gauge copper wire to an 16 gauge electrical cord. The copper wire doesn't have any covering on it. Is it okay to connect the grounds, then attach it to my keyless lampholder? Or is something bad going to happen then?

- Q:I'm replacing the door speakers in a 2001 Coupe Camaro with the factory sound system. I needed to know which wire was positive and which was negative so I bought a circuit tester. However, I keep getting the reading that both wires are positive. What could be causing this? I know the circuit tester works because I tested it on the battery terminals and it worked fine.
- If you power it up, and go from one wire to ground at a time it will work, if you use the tester between the two speakers wires it will be positive both ways you hook it.

- Q:I have two ceiling lights in my kitchen that come into the same wiring box (light switch). It's a single light switch that controls both lights. I want to install a two fixture light switch so that I can turn on each light by itself. It looks like there are only two wires coming into the box...a black one and a white one (and a ground wire). The two-switch I bought is requiring three wires though. How do I wire this thing?
- You would need an additional run of 2/14 wire ( 14 gauge wire , black, white and ground ) to go from the switch box to one of the fixtures for this to work. All of the bare grounds in the switch box would be joined with one going to the ground terminal on the switch. All of the common ( white ) wires in the switch box would be joined with a wire nut. The black wire supplying power to the switch would go on the side with the single terminal. One of the black wires to one light would go on one of the terminals on the other side. The new black wire would go on the other terminal on that same side.
