- Q: I am installing a ceiling fan. The directions say to connect the blue and black wire from the fan to the black wire coming from the ceiling and the white to the white from the ceiling using a wire nut. I have connected those with no problemThat leaves me with a green ground wire coming from the fan. However, the only ground wire coming from the ceiling is a naked solid copper wire. How am I supposed to connect those using a wire nut??
- Early on as an electrian I had a mentor who gave me this tip....take the stranded wire and lightly rub it in a clockwise direction, not a real twist just mold it so it sticks together a bit, place the two wires side by side but cheat the stranded wire up a bit so it (apprears) longer than the solid by maybe 1/32 of an inch. place the wire nut on and twist, you will feel it grab continue toi tighten just until it begins to pull the insulated part of the stranded wire taught.... you will see what I mean and understand....gently tug on stranded wire to make sure the joint is good.
- Q: I am replacing an old outlet with a GFCI and I have encountered a red wire...what is the red wire for?
- In general, bare copper wires are ground, white are neutral, and black or red are hot. Make sure all wires are completely separate from one another, and then turn the power back on. Be careful not to touch any of the wires. Use your voltage tester to find the incoming hot wire. The wire should be black. The white wire in the same cable will be the neutral. Additional white and black (or red) wires will be extensions of the same circuit test them as well.
- Q: its an older boat without fuse box, if you go to the manual on the website it gives you the wire layout. I know the radio works but a friend of mine disconnected the wires to try to put a switch in and never reconnected them. I don't know what to do with the ground wire or the red wire. Any suggestions?
- the ground wire black is connected to -ve of battery the red wire is connected to ignition wire so when you turn on the keys the radio starts the yellow wire is connected to +ve of battery, but radio will not switch on till red is connected. good luck

Would there be a hazard with using a multi core (speaker) wire for the grounding, or should we do the wiring with a single core wire.

- Q: How could you relate greater wire length resulting in greater resistivity to the context of home
- Greater wire length will certainly give you a higher resistance. Since heat is measured in watts, and watts (W) =I^2R, where I=Current and R= resistance, then if you double the resistance of a wire (by making it twice as long) you also double the ammount of watts lost in the wire. Since watts equates to heat, this ammount of heat will make the wire hotter. If you use an extension lead, and wind it round a drum, it can get very hot indeed.
- Q: i am going to be installing a flood light outside, i am running the wire on the outside of the house. i have down some small electrical work light outlets and switches but not sure on running wire. i was looking at lowes at outdoor wire and there are different size gauges. just wondering what size or gauge is best to use for an outdoor flood light?
- you will want to run the wiring in pvc conduit or regular conduit if the wiring is going to be exposed. it all your going to run is the outdoor light you could use 14awg wire.

- The electricity supply mains has three wires. They are called Live, Neutral and Earth The Live wire is connected directly to the generators of the electricity supply company. NEVER touch this wire, it carries 230 Volts and can kill you!! The Neutral wire returns the electricity to the generator after it has passed through the appliance, to complete the circuit. The Neutral wire is at approximately zero volts but you must NEVER touch this wire either!! If the wiring is faulty it may be carrying the same electricity as the Live wire. The Earth wire usually carries no electricity, it is there as a safety device. If something in the appliance goes wrong, or it is wired incorrectly, then the Earth wire may be carrying the same electricity as the Live wire. To be completely safe, NEVER touch this wire either!!

- Try different combinations until it works. Try the white on the common (black) screw and the red and black on the other 2 screws. If that doesn't work, rotate the three wires from screw to screw until it does.
