Q:I bought Nexxtech Evolution series 16 gauge 30' wire to be able to bring my rear speakers farther back in my room. I have an Altec Lansing 5.1 speaker system with remote and all the speakers connect to the back of the sub. (front are red wire, center is blue, and rear is gray) they are all have the black wire and the colored wire. The wire I just bought are brown, and have a stripe of gray on the second wire (polarized wires) but the ones I bought are much thicker wire... will it still work to just strip/twist/tape the wires to extend the rear speakers? or did I buy the wrong wire? and also, how do I know which to twist with which? (the ones I bought aren't really that clear on which is which... which end is positive and which is negative).Answer quickly please!

First of all, wires really don't make a difference at all - not for speakers anyway. Any cheap wire from home depot will work fine. The stuff they use for lamps works very well. Secondly, the colors, stripes, etc. don't make a difference either. Here's the only thing that matters - make sure you connect the (+) or RED wire from your amp to the (+) or RED terminal on your speaker. Likewise with the other wire. That's all you need to keep track of. If you don't do this, then your bass will suck.

Q:I bought a chandelier from Ikea and I am having trouble wiring it. The colors do not match the colors in the ceiling. There is also one extra wire in the ceiling. You do have a problem there, the colors in the ceiling are not standard. So black goes to black(hot), then green/yellow goes to the bare copper (ground). Now the tricky part is, you'll need a test meter to figure out if the yellow in the ceiling is the neutral which should go to the white. I would test between the yellow and the black in the ceiling (with the switch on) to see if there is 120V there. If there is problem solved, if not check between the red and yellow. I am guessing that either the red or the black will be the hot and the yellow will be the neutral. The one you do not use, I would cap off either by putting a wire nut on it or electrical tape.

You can't connect speakers directly to a turntable preamp. You need an amp.

Q:I have a 1989 Nissan 240sx. Somehow the fan caught a hold of the wiring harness and tore all the wires. any idea how much it's going to cost?

Buying a wiring harness will be prohibitive, and even transplanting one from a wrecking yard can be expensive. The harness can be repaired by splicing in pieces of wire where wire is missing and splicing together damaged pieces of wire. It is tedious but not particularly time consuming - I spliced in a section of harness after an engine fire in about 2 hours, working slowly.

Here's what you do: Run the thingy to that other thing. Make sure you don't forget that second step. When you're done, stop working. Then call an Electrician to fix what you did.

usually stock decks wont have a remote wire for an aftermarket amp but if you have a power antenna you can use the same wire that turns that on

Q:While updating the parents basement we needed to replace a very very old 3 way switch. However, the wiring to the Fluorescents seems extreme to me. Here is how i can describle the layout. Panel - junction box - double splice (one to light fixture and one to threeway switch below it)-. From that threeway switch 12-3 wiring to upstairs landing with other threeway switch resides. How should I make my connections to switches? If the other swtiches were not so old I would just copy them.

A hot wire from the panel to the first three way switch on the common screw. Two runner wires between the two switches on the other two screws. A wire from the common screw on the second switch to the hot wire on the light fixtures. A neutral wire to the light fixtures from the panel. Look at Bert's pictures.

The current passing through the wires will cause the wires to heat up if not sufficient guage. Think of the millions of little electrons pushing and shoving back and forth, all this action causes friction on a molecular level and of course we all know friction equals heat. In a bigger guage wire there is more room for the same number of electons. It's really that simple. Use as heavy a guage speaker wire that you can. You will have no signal loss and little heat.
