Q:so i got a few questions. on my 2000 chevy cavalier i got my audio system upgraded but toke it to a shop to get done i am ready to hook up a amp and woof but wanna do it my self to save a few hundred bucks as i was observing my car where to put stuff at i notice a blue wire that is going from where it looks like from my radio to my fuse box on the driver side and is hooked up to a fuse. what is that? and if its the remote wire can i hook up the remote wire for the amp with that blue wire to or is that to much?

There shouldnt be a wire going to your fuse box... They should have reused the stock harness and all of its connections. There should be a remote wire that comes off the deck and it is generally a Blue wire, but its never long enough to reach the fuse box. I am guessing thats a power wire. You will need to run a set of preouts and a remote wire from the head unit to the amp. You will also need to wire power to the amp.

Q:Ceiling fan has Green, Blue, black and white and the ceiling only has a black wire and white wire.

The blue and black wires from the fan are twisted together and attached to the black wire coming from the ceiling box using the enclosed wire nuts. The white wire from the fan goes to the white wire from the box. There may be a bare copper wire bent up into the box, if so pull it down and attach the green wire to it. If there is no bare wire you can get a short piece of bare copper wire and attach it with a screw to a hole in the metal box with an 8/32 machine screw. Wrap the copper wire clockwise around the screw, tighten, and then join green wire to bare. If you have no bare wire and the box is plastic then you will have nothing to use the ground wire to and it will be unused.

Q:I would like to know how to wire my West Marine VHF Radio.Coming out the back of the radio is a red wire, a white wire, and two black wires. The white wire and one of the black wires are a thinner gauge then the other black and red wires. Any solutions out there? Thanks

I would say the red wire is your power 12 V + side, The bigger black one would be you ground or - side , and the remaining two wires are for the speeker

Q:i know what spark plugs are but what are plug wires and the purpose of getting them. what do the plug wires do? someone told me that it was time to get spark plugs and plug wires replaced on my 2000 impala.

if they have never been replaced,yes it is a good idea,they transfer the[spark] to the spark plugs [hi energy] so they do wear out.

Q:we need to know how an electrical wire is measured. When you say for example a stranded tw wire 2mm2 does it mean 2mm square or 2 square mm meaning the area of the wire? does the measurement or size indicated in the insulation includes the insulation itself when measuring the wire? how about a stranded wire? basically the question is please explain the size of thw or tw wire stranded or solid wire indicated on the insulation. And how it is measured. does the insulation included in the measurement or just the copper wire inside that is measured.

The diameter of the conductor is generally going to be given in either gauge (AWG) or square millimeters. This is describing the size of the electrical conductor only, not including the outer insulation. Most wire specs will also include a measurement for O.D., which is outer diameter or overall diameter. This measurement will include all insulation and jacketing, and will be the total diameter of the cable. Stranded wires will be specified in terms of the overall gauge of the wire. For instance, a 22 AWG stranded wire might be marked as: 22 AWG (7x30) which means it's a 22 AWG stranded wire, made up of 7 strands of 30 AWG solid wire. Q:Is high quality CAT-5 ok to wire surround sound speakers to the receiver?

Noooo! Bad idea! Cat 5 is telecommunications wire, and typically designed to carry high frequency, low voltage, low power signals (i.e., network data). There are also typically four pairs of wire twisted at different numbers of turns per foot under that pretty blue jacket. These factors combine to make cat 5 a reeeally bad choice for speaker wire, and if you have big juicy amps, it might even burn your house down when it goes white-hot and sets itself on fire. If ya gotta go cheap, use 18 guage zip cord, which is insulated much better and has lots of copper strands to carry power. It usually has some marking or pattern on one side so you can keep your polarity (+ and -) straight. That's vital because your bass and your surround sound accuracy will be way bad if you get some of your speakers hooked up backwards. This may sound a bit whacked, but a good rule of thumb is to spend about 20% of the value of your gear on cables- they carry the information that eventually hits your ears as sound waves- and if any set of connections is bad, you lose quality and impact before you ever even hear it. It's tragic. If you don't believe this, go to a decent A/V store and do blind tests with good gear and different interconnects and speaker cables. It makes a difference- which is why I make my own interconnects...buts that's another question. Hope this helps.

Q:So earlier my passenger low beam wouldn't turn on. i went and bought a circuit tester and found out a wire located here _-_ lt;=== (the bottom right plug on the socket) that wire wont light up. i bought a socket at the same time, but i dont know how to replace it. and even if i did.. i don't see how that would fix the wire.It's possible the wire is fine. but i cleaned the socket and all that and still nothing.any advice would be great. i really need to drive at night1994 GMC jimmy

Your rig is 17 years old. The wires at the plug shrink and crack from heat and age. Then they get water into them and corrode inside where you cannot get at it. Does not happen with all cars, but when it does, it is a royal pain. Either try for a new plug/harness or cut one out at the junk yard and splice it in. Use heat shrink over the splices.

Q:I'm doing a science project on resistance and I need several different types of wire. I know to use copper wire, but what else could I ask for at a hardware store?

Aluminum is the most common wire material besides copper. You can ask the hardware store if they have thermocouple wire, it is a pair of dissimilar metals coupled to vary resistance based on temperature and is hooked to you thermostat in your house.If you really want to get exotic you could get ACSR (Aluminum Conductor Steel Reinforced) this is used by the power industry for power transmission and distribution. This is an aluminum conductor with a steel wire braided into it.
