Actually, the majority of modern airplanes do not have windshield wipers, and almost no light planes (single and twin engine) have them. Most aircraft use plexiglas for windshields, and one pass with a wiper blade would scratch and craze it to the point of being unusable. In flight, airflow clears water from the windshield quite effectively, and, when in the clouds, flight is by reference to instruments inside the cockpit. On breaking out of the clouds, the high speed air flow helps keep the windshield clear enough of rain for good visual acuity. Almost all have defrosters, which blow heated air on the inside of the windscreen, but that isn't really effective if you get into icing conditions - a heated windshield, or at least an alcohol windshield spraybar, is the only defense against icing over the windshield in that area. A number of large transport category airplanes do have wipers, primarily for ground operations, they are generally not used in flight.
- Q: I drive a 1999 Ford Taurus. About a week ago, I accidentally broke my side view mirror while avoiding a collision with a truck. The mirror is still intact; only the arm holding it snapped in half. But shortly after this, my windshield wipers stopped working. I drove to the store and they worked perfectly, but they won‘t turn on the way home. They haven‘t worked since. - Could be an electric problem, my buddy has an 03 Taurus with power mirror and defroster in them, the accident may have caused something to get screwed up in the wiring. Probably wrong but it is a chance, or the motor could have went.
- Q: I just bought a new windshield wiper motor for my car, amp; when it replaced it turned the wipers on amp; they moved in reverse! They want to stop at the top position. - The wiper linkage needs to be recalibrated so that they stop at the proper place. Simply remove the wiper arms off of the pivots with the wiper control KNOWN to be in the off - rest position. While not familiar with your particular vehicle, most wiper pivots are knurled for registration purposes and the arms held on with a spring clip. Therefore they have to be removed while holding the clip outward AND while pulling the arm straight off the pivot axle. It isn't too easy to do. Then the arms are repositioned and pressed back onto the pivot axles so they rest where they are supposed to.

- It's illegal to not have wipers. So if they don't work. that might be a problem. If the arms don't move, try going to a local junkyard and find a different windsheild wiper motor.

- Unless your car is new enough to use the frameless wipers, then you'll find your BMW dealer sells very economically priced replacement inserts for your existing wipers. They're actually a good deal from the dealer! If you want to move to frameless wipers, I recently installed the Bosch Icon's on my car, and have been impressed so far, although they're not cheap. Valeo also makes a similar design of frameless wiper.

- Ah you must be a city person and haven't seen raw, non homogenized milk. It will indeed settle. Cream is skimmed, leaving skim milk with a very small amount of partiulates.

- Q: I have a 1988 Chevrolet S10 Blazer and whenever i use my turn signal, my windshield wipers wipe. Even sometimes when i hit a bump they will wipe. I can even hit the steering wheel and they will wipe. Any ideas about what‘s wrong and how it can be fixed?
- The wiper switch is the turn signal lever. The turn signal switch is in the column. You can pull the lever out with a good yank and see if the wiring is worn thru. Do not unplug it from the bottom of the steering column, until you want to replace it, then tie a strong string to it and pull it out from the top. use the string and some tape to pull the new one thru. Otherwise you will have a B$%^** of a time trying to fish it back thru. That is the most common problem with GMs, the wiring shorts out inside the column. No need to remove the wheel, just the panel under the dash. Its a small plug, just make sure you get the one for your vehicle. Dealer or scrap yard, If you pull it out at the wreckers yourself you get to practise first
