- Q: We recently hired a contractor to remodel the entire bathroom due to water damage. We are getting close to tiling. There is a tub going in then the walls will be tiled for the shower.The contractor put green board in the entire bathroom first. Then he put water barrier paper over the green board in the areas that will be tiled. Then put hardy backer cement board over that. Is this a good way to do it? There is no cement board below a certain height because the tub will be there. I wasn't sure if this is a good way to do it?
- Excellent way to do it.. The green board, vapor barrier and the cementrous board is one of the best tiling techniques for water protection. edges must be treated for the tile , either in a special tile trim ( most are called an A 4200 but there are other trims, depending on the type of tile you have) or the metal edge to finish it off. - Q: What do you use under the tiles, and do you still use grout as well?
- Use sand and cement mix with water proof-er in it and use the same to grout.If you want to grout the tiles a different color mix a cement dye in the cement you are using as a grout.
- Q: Our contractor says green board is required for his corian shower because it is coved and waterproof. Is he right? The City says cement board is a new requirement because mold can get in. However, they will accept the manufacturers recommendation. We want to follow the building code.
- Absolutely, spend $30 more and use cement board. As a builder, I always line the studs with plastic, which overlaps the shower pan, then screw cement board over the plastic overlapping the shower pan (usually PVC product), then use red guard to seal seams and screw holes, then apply thinset mortar for tile, or mastic for corian, then seal all joints with grout sealer. It's your house and your money...stick to your instincts.
- Q: I found these in a house I bought and am not sure what they are nor what they would be used for. I'd hate to just throw them out if they could be used.
- Not for tile like every one is suggesting. That is way to thin. That size isn t even a 1/4 thick. That product , what every is is , isn t for tiling, thats for sure. Maybe a wall board for insulating of some type? Even thats a guess. GL

- Q: Its a baffle over an old fireplace where a gas heater has been installed. A cement based repair was hopeless, builders glue lasted a while but eventually busted when heater used on high for lengthy period. - Haven't experienced it but from what I read in your link, it gets hung/nailed like drywall and underlayment. If you're not familiar with how to hang drywall, the first link is a very informative step by step video. Second link, though not a video is how to install cement board/fiber underlayment. - Q: I can jump atleast 4 or 5 inches on a rug,grass, mud, sand. but i cant on cement when i ollie on cement my board like slips away after i pop and on everything else it doesnt. help?
- It is cause you have got so used to doing it on carpet. I wouldn't recommend anyone learning tricks stationary on carpet. Just keep practicing it. You will have to relearn it on cement.
