- Q: I live in a town home community. The person who loves immediately behind me (the backs of our homes face each other,) has been running a generator from 8am to 10pm every single day for the last two weeks. It is driving me up a wall. It's right outside my bedroom and kitchen. I have complained to the HOA and the town but nothing has been done. He is using a generator to power his whole house because they ran up their electric bill over the winter, didnt pay, and now can't afford to have it turned back on. Is running a generator even efficient? I imagin e spends more on gas every day then he would electric. Why not just sell the generator to pay the bill???
- Well it does cost more to constantly run the generator you are right there, unless it is on natural gas then probably not. What has happened is the electric company probably won't let him have service again because he owes them money for the unpaid bills, and he will have to pay the owed money plus late fees to get the power back on. So in his feeble mind he thinks running the generator is sticking it to the man so to say, when really he is only costing himself more money in the end and annoying the neighbors in the process. Sorry but if the HOA or town has no rules on owning and operating a generator there might not be much you can do. He is operating it within what I would call respectable time frames. I am not in support of him running it all the time but it is what it is. You could call the police and see if they could do something but don't expect it to be much.
- Q: engine is on a generator with about 800 hrs. changed fuel and fuel is getting to cylinder, pulled valve cover and valves are moving like they should, sprayed either in air intake and still no pop. any ideas other than to scrap the engine
- take it to a mechanic? how do you know there is fuel getting to the right spot? glow plugs?
- Q: Can you estimate the amount each year in CA.?What are the concerns/issues related to this application.
- I don't know about CA but where I live the predominant fuel for permanently installed back up generators is propane. Propane is used because generators can sit idle for weeks or months between power outages. Gasoline and diesel have limited shelf lives and fuel systems can clog with varnishes when not used. Propane has an unlimited shelf life and does not gum up in the carburetor. Natural gas is not available here. In places where it is available natural gas might be preferable to propane. Its impossible to estimate how much fuel you would use in a year. It depends how big your generator is and how many power failures you go through. Most generator manufacturers will tell you how much fuel their products use in an hour.
- Q: avr is automatic voltage regulator for power generators
- If you mean the build-in pcb of a fuel/diesel generator which build-up voltage initially and then keep it stable under any load, then read this: First you need to see your generator minimum requirements to determine specs of AVR. You will probably found a label on generator with those Information: Ex. volt (maximum excitation voltage) Ex. amp (maximum excitation amperage) Your AVR output must exceed those specs. If generator is brushless type in most cases it does. Also input voltage of AVR must be the same as output of generator (ex. 110V110V, 220V220V). If generator is triple phase then you can do the same (ex. 380V380V, 440V440V) but if generator have output in star formation then you can use node for a smaller voltage of AVR (ex. 380V220V, 440V253V). If generator work in parallel operation (usually marine main generators does) then things get complicated. In this case AVR is good to support current transformer to make generator more elastic under load fluctuations and match other generators in the same circuit.
- Q: If you were talking on the phone to someone and dropped the phone into a bathtub filled with water would they get electrocuted? Does it matter if it's wireless or not?
- A Wireless is ran by battery so you may not get electrocuted. Instead of being wired to your house electrical line, most telephones are powered by storage batteries located at the telephone company's central headquarters. The storage batteries, of course, are themselves charged by the local electric company line, but when possible, the phone company, in its infinite wisdom, tries to connect to two different power sources--in case the generator supplying one line goes out, they can fall back on the other. If everything fails, the batteries can usually supply enough current to cover short breaks in service. Should there be a longer interruption, many of the central stations are equipped with diesel generators that can be pressed into action with a flick of the switch. All of this complicated re-routing of electricity is made necessary by the happy fact that the telephone runs on a much smaller current than that supplied to homes by the power company--a happy fact because that's what keeps you from roasting your eyebrows when you're phoning from the tub. It takes a mere 100 milliamps of current flowing through your bod to bring on a killer dose of ventricular fibrillation, as they call it in the trade. Your heart stops beating and starts to quiver like an emotionally distressed bowl of Jell-O, cutting off the flow of blood to the brain and other vital organs. The electrical outlets in your home pack a whopping 15 amps; your humble telephone carries less than a tenth of a milliamp. That isn't much, but under some circumstances it might be enough to do a little damage, so underwater telephony should still be approached with caution. No deaths have ever been reported from this sort of thing, but there's a first time for everything.
- Q: I want to buy a GENMAX HY6500 GENERATOR FOR 220/240 VOLTS but is wondering if this generator is good. I saw one sold at $1,239 and on another site it was $299.00. I was adviced not to buy Wolf power because of poor customer ratings. I haven't seen any customer rating for GENMAX. I guess this is a Chinese company. The problem I am having in US is that I canot get a 50hz 220-240 volt generators. All I get is 60hz and I am told thy wouldn't work for Africa. Can anybody help?
- There is very little equipment made for one frequency that won't work just fine on the other frequency, (50 vs 60 Hz). The only problem you would run into is where a synchronous motor needs to run at an exact speed, such as tape recorders. But almost everything made today will function just fine on either 50 or 60 Hz. Actually, a 60 Hz generator can be made to put out 50 Hz by re-adjusting the governor to run the motor a little slower. For instance, if it is a 2-pole generator operating at 3600 RPM, the motor could be adjusted to run at 3000 RPM. If the generator was 4 poles, designed to run at 1800 RPM, readjusting the governor to run at 1500 RPM would do the trick. The only problem you might encounter would be slightly lower voltage - 100/200 Volts - but the the automatic voltage regulator should handle that just fine by increasing the field voltage/current.
- Q: How much would it typically cost to rent a 6000-8000watt diesel generator for a week? I know no one here probably knows for sure, so I'm just looking for ballpark figures. Thanks.
- You can expect to spend between $60-$80 per day for a diesel generator.
- Q: I want to power a water heater, a blower fan, and a small water pump continuously with a diesel generator run on Biodiesel. Is it possible to set up a system of some deep cycle batteries that will carry the load for say 1/2 hour or 1 hour and have the generator kick on automatically when the voltage drops to charge the batteriesthis way the generator will not be run continuously. What would you need to set this up? Anything besides what I have mentioned?Josh
- Let's say you've worked out all of the basic power balances. How many times do you expect the batteries to be recharged in a year? Even really good batteries will only recharge a limited number of times (maybe 2000?). And they are expensive!
- Q: How would i get people to fund a bomb shelter. Of course i will guarantee them a spot for them and there closest 4 family members. I want to stock it and build. I also want to have at least enough food to live for 6 months for at least 25 people. I will also want a ton of water (not literately a ton). Also some sort of water purification system, ventilation, and a diesel generator.I only want to shovel out about 5 thousand of my own cash.Tell me about how many people i need, how to get them. Maybe some places to get supplies.Thank you (:
- Well. I don't see the point. If the earth is destroyed, as so many of the 2012 lies say it will be, then the only thing that your bomb shelter will accomplish is to allow you to live 5 seconds longer than all the rest of the people on the planet. Seems like a steep price to pay for an extra 5 seconds of terror. On the other hand, since none of the doomsday predictions will occur, you might make a tidy sum if you market it correctly. There are people who are doing exactly that. Converting old Minute Man missile silos into survival condos, and many other things. Good luck with that, but stay prepared for buyer's remorse when Jan. 1, 2013 rolls around and the world is still here, and your clients are each out thousands or tens of thousands of dollars - and they know you have it. Watch your back.
- Q: i know that steam powers the turbine. And depending on the type of plant, i know how the steam is made. But once the turbine is spinning and generating electricity, i get lost. I know it all has something to do with electrons and metal coils and magnetic fields, but can you help me understand it all?
