A diesel power plant is a stationary installation incorporating one or more diesel generator sets with controls and switchgear. Diesel plants are usually used as emergency backup systems for military installations, hospitals, and other vital installations that depend on reliable electric power. There are also diesel power plants that are the only power supply for remotely located installations and communities; for example, remote radar stations and island resort towns. In a diesel plant, there are one or more diesel generator sets, consisting of a diesel engine and a suitable generator. A typical arrangement would involve three generators of which any two can handle the peak load while the third can be held as a standby unit or dismantled for major maintenance at intervals. There will be a switchyard that contains the electrical contactors and safety devices for connecting the generators to the grid as needed, and there will be control panels for the individual generators, as well as synchronizing gear to keep the generators in phase. In many installations these controls are computerized and can be operated and monitored at a distance over the internet or other communications arrangement. Also, there will be arrangements for handling the fuel required by the engines. Often there is a large tank and separate day tanks for each engine. This type of arrangement helps ensure that the entire supply is not lost in case the fuel plumbing or day tank for one generator set springs a leak.

Q:I live in southern Indiana, and am currently living through an awesome ice storm. Anyway, my parents bought a diesel powered portable generator. It is hooked into the main panel of the house. When you crank it up and turn the lights in the house on, they flicker, as does the TV screen. It has proper voltage on each leg of the 240. I brought my generator over and everything works fine. Any ideas?

if you hooked another generator to your panel and it worked fine the new generator is the problem. unless you changed the way you hooked it up. in that case look at your connections, closely at the ground for sure

Q:Does any one have any experience with Kipor Diesel Generators?I know the price is really good. But are they reliable? Or will i shoot myself for buying another Chinese product?I'm looking at model KDE16STA

Dont buy anything Chinese. They are not interested in customer satisfaction or quality and just want to shift as much product as possible. The materials are usually sub-standard and the build quality is total rubbish! I guess it depends what you want it for? If it is a one off use and then you are prepared to throw it away then maybe consider it but otherwise spend even double the amount and get some equipment that can be serviced and that has a customer service and back up plan. It will be more value in the long run. It is also more patriotic.

Q:i have an old marine onan generator. It is a two cylinder diesel engine and the block is almost round on the bottom. I thought it was a cummins but im not sure. I know it is vague but can anyone help.

the other guys are right cummins owens onan. sounds like a 750 kw it is a good lighthouse, you find that it uses about .2 gl an hour of diesel. its some what hard on raw water impellers ( carry an Extra) and you'll need to change the mounts to stop some of the vibration other than that its been very reliable for me. it powers my 53 foot trawler no problems.

Q:Im currently working on a DC generator design . I have my output set to 3000 kw . Any idea what's the usually assumed voltage for this rating ?

This is not possible or practical for any reason; especially using DC !!

Q:I live 30 miles east of Seattle in an area that is frequently without power. Up until this year the outages were less than 48 hours but this year we have had repeated outages, one of which lasted 6 days after a stronger than usual windstorm. I had to scramble to find somewhere else to be. I lost several days of work, all the food in my refridgerator and freezer. At what point does it make sense to just install a standby generator?

They are really worth it. If you have the money put in an automatic type. If you have natural gas or propane use that for fuel it will save having to fuss with gasoline or diesel fuel. I live in the city but still have a 5000 watt gasoline one I can hook up to the furnace, a couple of lights and the freezer. We had power out for about 14 hours during a ice storm and it worked great. but I had to keep refuelling it every 5 hours or so.
