- Q: I am building a shower in the basement of a 50 year old house in Michigan. I am using cement board (backerboard) for the sides which I framed in. The back of the shower is the existing cement block wall. Can I apply the mortar and tile to the cement block wall just as I would for the cement board? Will there be any problems with it stinking? The wall will get chilly during the winter.
- I don't see a problem with that as long as you make sure you use a high quality water-proofer for the grout. I installed tile directly onto cement and it turned out well... I just made sure to use a lot of coats of water-proofer. Mine wasn't in a basement though, which is traditionally more damp and prone to mold, mildew, etc.

- those are probably asbestos! caulk the damages with acrylic latex and paint.
- Q: can plywood be used instead of cement backer- board for tile?
- Im not for certain but i don't think it can be used instead of cement backer board. Plywood is very preamble and the grout may soak through? I would call a Lowe's or Home Depot and ask for the flooring dept. or lumber and ask them.
- Q: My husband fixed the faucet in the tub around two years ago. He cracked one of the tiles. We bandaged the area, but water has been getting behind the tiles. So, we have water damage. Plus, there is this weird white fungus looking stuff that is growing in some of the grout lines. I don't want to just put a liner over this mess. I would like to pull all the tile off and put cement board up (the house is old and it has sheet rock behind the tile), so i can start fresh. Will the liner hold up the same if it is glued to cement board rather than tile?
- You def need to see what is behind that tile so you cannot just cover it, as you suspected. There should never have been dry wall there in the first place. You need green board. Take everything down...let it dry back there for 3 days even using fans if necessary. Then put up green board, then the wall liner.

- That is the proper way to do it. You need the thin set to act as a filler so there are no voids at all between the ply and the cement board. 1/4x1/4 notched trowel is the required trowel. This is according to tile installation ( both ATC and TCA tile guide line codes) and the cement board manufactures way to do it. - Q: Hi All,Basically what I am trying to say is that I have a wooden board which will be placed vertically on the floor and would be a decoration.I want to have a coating of cement of some sort on it and make some patterns on it.I like to know if it is possible to lay a thin coating layer of cement or even tile bond glue to a wooden board, lets say a timber board.basically anything that can give me the concrete/cement look as rough as that.. uld be any kind of cement or tiling glue or such...Thanks
- It might crack on you so why don't you just use some modeling clay and use a trowel and just play with it to look like cement
- Q: the durock cement board is 1/2 inch and the drywall is 5/8 of an inch...So the shower wall is about an 1/8 of an inch recessed intothe wall. What can I do to fix the situation without redoing anymore walls. If I butt up the bullnose tile against the drywall about half of the tile's thickness sticks out...actually looks ok. I don't know if i should try to make a gradient from the drywall to the tile. There are also some gap between the two types of boards.....fill it with mortar?
- O.K. in this situation I will usually float this area , in other words the same way u float sheetrock , but I use mastic instead of gypsum compound.
