- Q:I would like to replace my carpet with a real hard wood floor., but my floor under the carpet is cement. Can any one give me advise as to how I go about this. want to do it myself.
- Both engineered and solid wood flooring can be installed over concrete. If the floor is below grade however, no solid wood can be used, only engineered, which means a 3, 5, or 7 ply prefinished board. Hardwood on concrete should be glued whether it is solid or engineered. 3/4 hardwood cannot be glued down so you'll need to use a 3/8, 5/16, or 1/2 board. Be sure that the cement subfloor does not contain excessive moisture. You can do this yourself with a calcium chloride test. DO NOT seal concrete before gluing down hardwood. If you do, the glue will not adhere properly and there is a very high chance that the floor will fail. There are also real wood floors that are designed to be floated. They lay on a foam underlayment and are not attached to the subfloor in any way but simply glued together. These products are easier to install but are not yet perfected in my opinion. They have a tendency to peak, sound hollow, and seperate. I suggest glue down hardwood. Also get a book to provide you with some basic technique. Installing hardwood is pretty straightforward and you should have no major difficulty.
- Q:Asbestos cement board product features
- Thermal insulation: low thermal conductivity, a good thermal insulation properties, high product density, good noise.
- Q:We are building a new house and I am going to install tile in the bathrooms myself, we have the drywall hung and will be sanded in the next day or two. My question is, can I go ahead and hang the Cement backer board in the showers? or do I need to wait until the drywall is sanded or primed? Thanks :o)
- Hang it now, you'll be fine.
- Q:Installing a shower in my basement, and am framing around a fiberglass 36 square shower base. should I put it flush against the frame and then attach cement board (it will overhang) or leave room to slide cement board between base and frame? Thanks!
- The framing goes tight to the shower pan, and the cement board goes down to the lip of the pan, but not over it. IMPORTANT: do not run the cement board over the lip or this will cause a bow at the bottom all the way around. Your tile will run down to the shower base. If you ran the cement board behind the shower pan the lip would stick out and when you tiled, the tile would be pushed out as described at the bottom row. I hope this makes sense to you.
- Q:How to remove the paint on the surface of the cement board
- This is more difficult, even with a thinner is also not clean, because the paint has penetrated into the inside. If the marble is very affected, then, with electric grinding wheel to remove the handle, so thoroughly, but also increase the surface roughness.
- Q:I removed a fiberglass tub and enclosure since it was damaged beyond repair. I am now installing a steel tub and am going to install an enclosure with it as well to save time with tiling. Now with the studs exposed, I would think I would put up a vapor barrier on the studs, then the durock cement board and then attach the enclosure. I know you use cement board for tiling, but if you are putting up an enclosure do I still use cement board?
- You don't need to use Durock (cement board) if you are installing a surround. You would use that if you were putting tile around the tub. Other posts mention green board, and that is what was used in the past, but it is more common now to use a wallboard that is mold and mildew resistant, such as Gold Bond XP, made by National Gypsum, which is purple. You should be able to find that, or a similar product by another manufacturer at your local building materials dealer. Good luck!
- Q:I used a razor but it killed the blade in about two seconds. Is there a special saw for this stuff that won't make a huge mess?
- It really doesn't matter how sharp the blade is. You're not actually cutting the board, you're scoring it. You can do that with a nail, if you had to. Don't bother pressing down too hard on the knife, it won't get you through the material any better. You just make three or four passes with medium pressure and snap it like sheetrock. As long as the blade hasn't gotten rounded at the tip, it will work just as good as a new one. Any type of saw is going to make a mess and isn't necessary.
- Q:over the bath tub is durock cement board enough by itself,or it has to be something else under durock...?
- There's no requirement (USA) to put anything behind the durock located over your tub. If you're planning on using it (not already installed) I would consider switching to green board. It is much cheaper and most of all, lighter. Green board is only sheetrock that has been waterproofed - and it works well. If you are installing durock, ensure you securely attach it to the joists above the tub. Also, if installing any lights, fans etc over the tub, the sheetrock is much easier to cut and affix fixtures. Good luck
- Q:Is the cement board poisonous?
- The general use of cement made of cement concrete slab is not toxic.
- Q:I am laying a new tile floor over plywood subfloor. I have Durock cement backerboard. The area I'm covering is only 4'3 x 6'8. I don't really want to put the money out for power saws ($60+) so I am planning to use a hand saw. What kind is most appropriate? Can I use a small utility knife for the smaller details?
- You can actually just score it like drywall & snap it.
