Q:I have heard of Cold Rolled steel, Castle Forged steel and Valerian steel and i was just wondering the difference between them.I know Valerian steel is by far the strongest and durable but what about the other two types? Do you know because i haven't read all the books yet.
Cold rolled steel is referring to rolled steel. It is referring to weapons made from rolled steel that is unrolled and stamped out. In real-life, rolled steel isn't nearly as strong as steel that is cast and forged. Think of a cheap dinner fork that you can easily bend and a nice dinner fork you can't bend at all. The cheap fork is stamp-pressed out of rolled steel and the nice fork is cast. In Game of Thrones, cold rolled steel is crap, but it's cheep and common. Castle forged steel is the best most people have available, much higher quality than cold rolled steel. Presumably it's forged in the castles of Westeros, including King's Landing. Valerian steel is special, rare steel that was anciently forged that is stronger than any other steel. They no longer make Valerian steel since the fall of Valeria. As such, the only Valerian steel available is by getting it from things already made. In real-life, it might be comparable to the extremely high quality steels forged into ancient katanas, ninja fighting swords from Japan. The Lanisters took a sword made of Valerian steel that had been passed down to Ned Stark and had it melted down, recast, then forged into two smaller swords.
Q:i have a sword and some knives that have this grade steel. so is it a high grade or low grade? and how can i tell the differance between a high grade and a low grade?
For throwing knives, 440 isn’t necessarily a bad choice. Does it list whether it is 440c or 440b? That matters somewhat. The advantages of 440 Stainless is that it’s relatively hard (for a stainless), it resists rust significantly, and it’s not so hard that it would shatter or break. On the down side 440 is notorious for not taking or holding an edge, but for a throwing knife, that’s probably not much of an issue. If you’re looking for something to train with, you’re fine here. It’s plenty of steel enough to stick in wood or other targets. Odds are it won't bend if you slam it into some wood. If it lands on concrete, eh, it's going to scratch and all that jazz, and it might hurt the tip if it hits first, but as has been said, you can use a file or grinder to get the tip back.

Q:I work in a steel foundry 10-12 hours a day where we melt and pour stainless steel tubes. The pour temperature for some of them is very close to the boiling point of stainless steel (about 3800 degrees) because it has to be VERY liquid for the application we use it. Anyway, it does boil a little and we breath in the vapours which I can assure you ARE indeed vapourized stainless steel (it collects and cools on everything and makes a nice shiny coating). Ok, so to the question, does breathing vapourized stainless steel all day pose a health risk such as cancer? Anyone know? I'm just curious.
