Q: I have a newly constructed basement (less than a year) which is being used for wine storage. Its too humid. I am adding ventilation and have treated the floor with a moisture barrier. Now I want to paint the floor.
I Have Painted shop floors with the wrong paint enough times that now I KNOW. Use Rustoleum floor paint 2 part epoxy. Preparation is a must. Pressure wash the floor. then etch it with muriatic acid then wash it again. (Vacuum it up with a wet dry vac)Next you need to dry it I used a portable salamander heater with a piece of flashing to deflect the heat down. When you are 100% sure it is dry paint itwhile the floor is warm. I used this method on a shop floor the only way paint comes up is with the concrete attached. Every other thing anyone has ever sold me or told Pealed up.
Q: I am looking to live in a second floor apartment. How big is too big of a fish tank to put on the second floor? I have a 75 gallon now. Is that too big. My fish grow fast, I upgrade my tank every year so how big before I have to live on the first floor?
If the apartment is wood construction then I would be comfortable with a 75 or 125 as long as you place this along a supporting wall, a corner is better and make sure it goes over several beams in the floor as opposed to all of the weight being on one rafter. If they're concrete floors don't worry about it and get a big tank.
Q: Is It Possible For Me To Put Down Laminate Flooring Even If My Floors Aren't Perfectly Even? How?
yes, but if the floor has humps and bumps all over it will show up in the new floor.....check into a floor leveler for the area.. lic. gen. contractor
Q: 1) Ground Floor2) Middle Floor3) Top Floor
Top if young as the noise is less. Bottom if old - no walk up. Middle if poor - noise both ways and should be priced lower...
Q: I have vinyl 12"by12" tiles that I am putting on concrete floor Henry 430 vinyl composition tile adhesive. The concrete floor is not perfectly even. In some places the gap could be as much as 1/8". I am trying to use the adhesive glue to fill this gap. Will this work? Can I use the glue to make my floor more even to put the tiles on. Thank you.
You need to float the floor to make it flat. Do NOT use extra adhesive. It will never dry and will come up between the tiles for years. Use any good brand of float, Henry has one. Sand after it drys for a completely smooth floor. A pro installer will spend MORE time with the prep than the installing.
Q: Do you have a solid wood floor?
It depends on you do not do the keel, and do, if not a difference between the flatness does not matter. Do not do on the flatness requirements are very high.
Q: I'm going to be installing laminate flooring in a house that has had the carpet and old tiling torn out. The floor is currently bare smooth concrete. The house is not over 20 years old so everything is in good (non-leaking) condition. The only thing on the floor is some of the residual carpet glue and some screw holes from the thresholds. Will i need a vapor barrier? If so, what kind? will i need to seal the concrete floor with something? What is the best kind of saw to use to cut laminate flooring when detail work needs done as well? Thank you for your answers!
You will need a moisture barrier(plastic sheeting)because all the prepadded laminate ive ever seen requires a moisture barrier over concrete slab. The weight of the floor keeps it down but if you attach it to anything it will cause the floor to buckle or seperate when it expands or contracts.Depending on where your installing it and what brand you may need to fill expansion gap with silicone and/or to glue the pieces together to keep moisture from getting down between the boards.
Q: There's a garden apartment I really like, but it's on the ground floor. That seems to me dangerous because to rob the place all you'd have to do is break that window. It is in a pretty nice neighborhood, though. Do you think it's too risky to take this? I really like the apartment otherwise.
I've lived in two apartments that were downstairs and never had any problems. I lived in nice neighborhoods. Now I live in a house and I've never felt unsafe either. It's really up to you to check out the apartment complex first. Drive around it at night and see what it's like. Check with the police for crime reports in that neighborhood.
Q: What is the quality of b grade laminate flooring? Does it scratch if a piece of paper touches it?
While not specific to laminate flooring, grade 'b' flooring in general is a step down from the top of the line, generally exhibits subtle flaws on the surface but maintains an even coating surface (that is to say, you don't have to fill extra space). With most hardwoods this translates to a rating of #1 or #2 common floors. With Laminate floors I would guess that there would be mild warping, and slight unevenness in the surface. Perhaps a lower quality laminate used, but mostly a lower grade particle board backing, which would lend itself to being cracked along the seems easier.
Q: want to build an apartment downstairs without noise coming thru floor
You can best do this by isolating the floor from the ceiling by adding a new set of ceiling joists and have the apartment ceiling structurally separate from the floor. The ceiling joists would go up between the floor joists with the bottoms about an inch below the existing floor joists. Dampen the space between the joists with fiberglass batt insulation and also use a good dense sound board on the bottom of the new ceiling joists. The gypsum board ceiling can be screwed through the sound board into the new joists. This may not be the cheapest way but it is pretty effective way of reducing sound transmission through a floor/ceiling.
