- Q:I am looking at replacing my kitchen floor, which currently has carpeting. (Bought the house like that.) And now I am looking to do either vinyl or tile. I understand tile is good for a lifetime, where as vinyl is good for 15-20 years for the heavier kind, but tile is double the cost. We plan on staying in our house a long time, if not forever, but in the case we would decide to sell, would tile or vinyl give us more value?
- I can only answer this according to resale in my area where I live. Tile will up the value of your home here. But...here, we have cold winters, and if you have tile, it had better be heated or the tile will be worthless as they get very cold underfoot. Personally, I like vinyl for the fact that it is warmer underfoot, and it can come in tons of colours/designs/thicknesses. It can be expensive too, so you will have to shop around. Vinyl will mark, but so will tile. Tile will last longer, but be sure it is installed properly. Tile is tougher overall, but you might want to change it after 15 years and it will be cheaper to change vinyl than it will be to change tile. If you choose vinyl, just do not choose the cheapest as it will have more of a tendancy to yellow and tear. Ensure your heavy appliances are on wheels so the vinyl will not tear when you move them for cleaning (done that one before).
- Q:I want to know how to make tile based map in java. Retro games used tiled maps (to ease programming and memory management) but those games were created in assembly language. I know basic java. Now I want to make a 2d game in java, starting with a pretty basic 2d platformer type or top-down type. To do this, i need to know the technique required to make a map, a tile map.I have already searched in google and youtube and stack overflow, but none helped much. - first of all, you need to build different densities of 2D tile arrays according to how much of the map will be in the viewport at any given time. For example, a map at neighborhood level will need a gazillion more tiles than a map at the county level. Then, you need a way of converting the geographic reference at the center of the viewport to the tile that is covered at that zoom level, and for finding the adjacent tiles as well. Then, you'll need to calculate what parts of which tiles you are using will need to be clipped and by how much. Build a canvas using this information. As the map moves, you'll need to add on more adjacent tiles, and discard others, update the clipping, etc.
- Q:I am going to lay bathroom floor tiles in my bathroom but I have some questions before I start. 1. Can I lay the new tiles over the existing floor, which is vinyl flooring? Or do I have to remove that first? 2. If I have to remove the vinyl flooring do I have to add cement backer board? Or can I lay the tile right over whatever is under the vinyl flooring? 3. I have trim along that floor that I will be re-attaching, do I lay the tile right up to the wall or do I put a space in between the wall and the edge tile? - pull up the vinyl and mortar AND screw down Hardybacker board . dont buy that crap gypsum board from lowes or that foam stuff. dont EVER lay tile down over wood... EVER lay your tile 1/4 inch away from the walls. and then your base board and base shoe will lay over the tile and it'll look great. grab some 1/8 spacers.... lay with a 1/8th inch gap and it will look much nicer.

- Q:My bathroom size is 7 ‘*11 ‘. If I want to use 20*20 tiles, will it look good? I want to use bigger tiles because I don‘t like grouts. Can we put anything to make the tile not so slippy?
- The tile will look fine if you do either a diagonal pattern or an off set look Off set pattern can be either a brick look,like every other row 1/2 tile offset from the other row or you can do every row 1/4 of a tile of set. This helps break up the bigger tile in a smaller area. Using these types of patterns ( off set) you can use a minimal grout grout (1/8) to make the grout be less. Use a grout that matches the tile.Medium colored grouts show that least day to day dirt. Seal the grout well and it ll stay cleaner longer . If the floor is properly prepped,and the tile set properly, they won t crack as some one suggested. There are a few products that you can use on ceramics to make them less slippery. One is called B-Safe, made for commercial kitchens . But you can only do so much to make tiles less slippery when water gets on them. - Q:Can you give me your opinion? White beveled subway tiles with dark gray marble floors, or mahogany brown large rectangular floors with matching size walls in beige tile? I was thinking of adding a glass border for accent, the tile store lady told me to put it up high, one right below the last cut of tiles as opposed to between the faucet and mirror. - This is a beautiful piece. If you want a bright atmosphere, the dark floor might be too overwhelming. Have you considered floor tile in the green shade of the sink? Gray is a popular color right now and would match nicely with the green. I would go with green floor tiles with a gray tile here and there. The opposite on the walls, gray with green dispersed throughout. As for the glass accent, the woman at the store is a great resource. Can the glass be tinted in a darker color to bring in the richness of the cabinet? White toilet and tub never go out of style and if you want to remodel in the future, they will still stand the test of time. I moved into a 70's era mobile home a few years ago. The tub, sink and toilet were blue. I did not have the finances to replace any of these. My solution was to decorate around them to look like the blue color was my intent. These are just a few ideas. I can see you have good taste and I hope you enjoy the process.

- I've heard slate tiles are good, especially for heat conduction. Many people use them on top of sand to reduce the risk of sand ingestion and impaction.

- Vinyl floors can be dangerous in bathrooms. They're VERY slick if the floor gets wet or if you get out of a shower/tub with wet feet. You can put heaters under ceramic tile or place rugs on the floor if you're worried about coldness.
- Q:I have a commercial pool thats about 100 years old ( with modern modifications). The ceramic tiles on the floor area are original. We have been begged by just about everyone not to replace them. It looks soo dirty. Our comepetition is more expensive.....water quality is horrible....and their pools are packed all day. Im lucky to get 5 people in an 18 hour day. The water and inside the pool look nice.....just getting to the pool...people think they will get a disease. Its just old age stain....not sure what that is exactly.
- you could try an acid base cleaner on the tile . These type of stains may be just old age though and i know every one says don't replace old things but if these tiles are past there prime? i am sure you can get a modern tile that has the same look
- Q:rented an apartment about 1 year ago.My landlord put a brand new bathroom in including ceramic floor tiles,I just noticed cracks in 6 or 7 of the tiles but I do not remember doing any damage that would cause this.The only thing I did was flood the bathroom but mopped it up right away and the floor is waterproof anyway.The landlord said those tiles where very expensive and said they should last at least 10 years before they crack,and now she is taking the cost of the tiles including installation cost out of my security deposit.
- Yup she crayz ! Bad tile guy ! I don't know what cause there lot he could of done to mess it up or the framers ,plumers, there not any thing u did I'm sure of that ! Well if u can't get out of it the good new It's a small bath sounds like an u could do a better job for not that much . Well not enuff thin set ,he used mastic, plumer cut jous, bad framing, not ataching to jous, dry mixed thin set , dust on tiles, wet tiles when installing , I'm sure there's more , not ur fault!
