- Do not know where you live but I worked in a Shipyard in South Mississippi That had Cranes which picked up Modules which weighed 100 tons. Most were in the range of 50 to 70 tons the limiting factor was the range of the lift away from the crane. The further away from the Crane the less the load limit but the Cranes were rail mounted so they could traverse and carry the load anywhere. We had one Crane capable of handling 500 tons, a real monster. These are all located at Pascagoula Mississippi. Most were imported from Germany.

- Q: My boyfriend's a little sick right now, and he's going to have a surgery over summer. I'm in the process of folding him 1000 cranes (like the Japanese legend), and in every crane I wrote a message. I have a list of all the messages so far. I'm not sure how to give it to him, though. 1000 cranes is a lot of cranes... and I don't want to make him carry a big heavy box or anything. I also want him to be able to read the messages... something I didn't think of much when I decided to write them on the paper I folded the cranes with...Anyway, I was thinking about a scrapbook or something. But that would be a really big scrapbook. And I'd have to probably write out all 1000 messages again in it... Plus, I'm not sure if I can find a scrapbook with enough pages.Any ideas?

This summation, or something like it comes up in every search I do for the legend. Is there a full story that goes with the original legend? If so I would very much like to read it. A long time ago when heroshima, the atom bomb hit, there were only few survivors. one little girl, i dont remeber her name, was told she was going to die. he heard an old legend that if someone were to fold 1000 paper cranes in one year, they would recive a wish that would come true. The littl girl started folding paper cranes so she could wish that she would live and everyone would have world peace. She sadly died before she was able to fold all 1000 cranes, but ever since a paper crane was a symbol of peace. She has a statue in japan and every year they recive thousands of paper cranes made from children around the world that they hang on her statue.

They come in two formats, free standing and those attached to the building. The possibilities that I thought of was that maybe they use another crane to lift the housing and the horisontal arm to put in more modules into the vertical part; or that they extend it by some way by putting modules in at the top or bottom and that the crane has some self-lifting mechanism to accommodate the insertion of more modules. However, I have never seen this being done, nor does the construction of these cranes point to its ability to do so. The only other possibility that I could think of was that the crane is set up at the outset to be higher than the completed height of the building, hence there is no need to extend it but this does not explain how they do it for very high buildings where the crane is attached to the building and seems to grow higher with the building.
