- Q: I have a new bathtub with Durock cement board installed around it and I‘m ready for tile. I just got a guy out to give me an estimate for doing the tile work around the tub and he said the Durock would have to be primed first. I‘ve heard you‘re supposed to put the tile directly on the Durock, not paint it. Now I don‘t know what to do. Is he wrong? If he‘s wrong, do I hire someone else or just question him? He did another (non-tile related) job for me and did an excellent job, so I trust him, but I‘m nervous about this. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!
- Do NOT prime cement board before tiling. The whole reason is to bond to the cement substance of the Durock or cement board. There are times or situations that you need to water proof cement board , but that would be a different situation. I would consider hiring some one else. - Q: My kitchen has a white ceramic tile floor. It never looks clean, every speck of dirt shows. Because we live in a slab home, the tiles are glued right to the concrete. I hate to think how much work it would be to remove them. I could tile over - but it would make the kitchen floor higher than the surrounding rooms. Is there any suitable product for changing the color of the tile in such a high traffic area?
- There is no GOOD way to do this. And you are right in that tiling over tile is a bad idea. You could go over it with a product like DuraCeramic, which would only raise the floor level up a small amount, but be aware that anything you put over that surface will likely make the existing surface unusable forevermore and you might regret it someday. The real solution would be to demo the existing tile and install new tile.

- Bilbo has a good answer. Or just go to a store, like Home Depot, and purchase the inexpesive tiles. Any craft store will have the creramic paints you need. Some need to baked in your oven, and some don't.

- Q: I‘m thinking about most economical way to up grade my living and master bedroom flooring.both had laminate and had flood slab leak due to underground water pipe damage. now the pluming has fixed and everything has been taken care of. the rest of the house already got white tiles throughout. I can go laminate in the living room and tile in the bedroom. both rooms are about 280 sq.ft. or I can do the need room laminate again. I don‘t know how to put the flooring, so I would Gabe to hire someone to do it. we have a Lowes home center where their contractor can come out and to the installation. they want $35 for an estimate. we also have a floor center just down the street from us. their material was little more expensive than the Lowes price but perhaps the installation may be cheaper... I‘m not sure. would tile thought the house including the bedroom better, cheaper than laminate in the bedroom? I know I would want laminate in the living room hopefully nothing gets wet.
- Laminate is much cheaper and easier to apply than tile flooring. Tile is a better quality and will last longer than laminate. You simply need to pick which option fits your needs and budget.

I already have the tile, don‘t want any special designs, and have normal rectangular shaped bathrooms with a toilet on one wall (i.e. very few weird cuts). - Tile labor varies but you can plan on 4/5$ a S/F not a s/y.. This won t include prep or rip out or any setting materials. That depends exactly what needs to be done.Rip out will vary too depending on just how the tiles are set now. I ve done rip outs that have taken an hr and have done ones that size that have taken all day. So have an installer look at the rip out part and quote a set price so both of you know on the rip out. - 18 x 18 = 18 sq in. which = 1.5 sq ft. 170 / 1.5 = 113.3 Buy about 130 of them, you'll have to cut some of them to get them to fit. Wouldn't hurt to buy 150 just in case.
