- Q: i have to do a science fair project and thought it would be cool to make a solar powered vw bus. i have 2 6volt solar panels to power a dc motor that works off of 9v 2v or 8v. i also bought a 2nd motor because the first wasnt workin for us. this one is a 3v motor. ive had them in the sun but they wont work. please help, thanks
- You didn't say how much power your panels can produce, or how much power (current x volts) the motors require. The panels must meet or exceed what the motor requires. You might need to get a very small motor and a little gearbox out of some other motorized toy, or at least a small pinion gear for the motor and a larger ring gear that can be attached to an axle (similar to how RC cars accomplish their drive train). A worm gear drive set might be even better if the motor / solar panel combination isn't very powerful - it'll go slowly, but some movement is better than no movement. If you put the panels in series, a 2 V motor should be the best match (again, only if its power requirements are small enough). If you want to try running the 3 volt motor off the panels, you might try paralleling them (make sure you get the polarity right or they'll try to kill each other) - you'll still be mis-matched, but if the motor requires less power than the 9/2/8 volt motor(s), it might work. If you have or can acquire a multi-meter, you'll be able to measure the voltages and currents and that will not only help you see what's going on, but adding some details might help others help you get this working.

And since such a panel would not have safety certification, it could not legally be connected to the grid in most places. If you meant a water heating panel, please update or post another question - I'm sure people will chime in.

- They are absolutely worth it. I had a town house in Boston with solar panel shingles and they were able to supply enough energy for me to feed back the grid-- literally making money off of them. I am building a very large home in the suburbs now and we are doing solar shingles on that. Our contractor estimated that with our geotherm heat pump and energy efficient lighting we should still be able to throw back more energy to the grid all year round! As for leasing it is not worth it. For one thing, most leasing contracts prevent you from selling your energy to the grid yourself but rather they take a cut. But a bigger issue: the government gives you a tax credit on solar panel installations but only if you purchase them! I did the math myself the first time I did solar panels and with the tax credit I saved 25% over leasing. Something else to consider is that with your own panels you can connect a variety of other systems to your home and modify them as needed.

- Photolvoltaic arry is the more technical name and the more accurate name for solar panels. Photo indicates light and voltaic indicates a voltage is produced.. Array is just a layout of these little light sensitive electricity generating panels. Actually Solar only idicates the SUN and not light in itself..

- Solar panels have tempered glass, and are tougher than they seem. On commercial buildings where the panels are flat, they have a person with a mop regularly clean them, and that person walks right on the panels. A car might crack the glass, but that could be solved by simply using stronger glass. The problem of putting a panel right in the roadway would mainly be that the cars passing over it shadow the panel constantly. On a rooftop installation, installers try to avoid even a tiny shadow from a vent pipe or overhead wire, as this has a larger effect than might be supposed. Also, road grime would quickly accumulate on the panel and reduce its efficiency. Glass would be slippery as a road surface, but that problem could be solved. Metal is slippery, too, but they make bridges out of it. EDIT: To clarify, I meant serious solar panels in the first paragraph. The hobby type that they sell at Radio Shack or Harbor Freight are fragile.
