- The easiest way to get good sound is to connect a pair of high quality active speakers to the headphone jack output from the TV. You will get much better sound then a sound bar, without the cost of surround sound. I would recommend the AudioEngine A5+ or A2 speakers, but there are other great ones out there too. If that is too expensive for you, you may also be happy with a Dayton Audio DTA1 Amp paired with a set of Dayton Audio B652 speakers.

- I have done similar to what you are doing, though I am not quite sure what parts you are using. Hopefully what I have done might show you something different. I got 2 parts, 1st is the link to Amazon, where you find the 3.5mm to RCA Stereo Female Cable. The second is RCA To Speaker Wire Plugs. Those two together worked for me, and if you have the male cables for both, you can always get a connector, though I know that an additional component would add more impedance, thus lowering the connectivity and performance. Have you tried hooking up your setup to an external source such as MP3 player? The problem might not be in the wiring, but the computer jack not having enough power to drive your speakers especially if they were used to hook up to an amplifier. If the speakers are indeed powered stereo speakers, you might have to do a AUX line-in to a stereo that is powerful enough to drive your speakers.

- You failed to mention what AV Receiver you are using, or what make model speakers you have. These are NOT the left over speakers from some crappy $399 box system - are they? You cannot use these on other gear. Basically - you just wire up the sub and 3 front speakers and ignore that you do not have rear sounds. If you have not purchased an AV Receiver yet - the Yamaha RXV-6 series has a nice feature. You can tell the receiver you have hooked up 1 speaker and it will route all the sounds to that single speaker. Or you can use 2,3 or 5 speakers and it will adapt. Hope this helps.
