The speakers are located front left, middle, and right, side left and right, and rear left and right. The eighth speaker is a sub-woofer for the low frequencies which are mostly non-directional. Choose one: excellent sound, low price. I've seen 6 speaker systems for $100 and I've seen 2 speakers for thousands. Guess which sounds better.

- It depends on how you connected the External Speakers. When you plug the external speakers into the Speaker Jack the internal speakers are cut off Automatically. At least on my laptop they are. If your external speakers plug into a USB port (not common) then the internal speakers will still be on.

- Which Bose speakers are you comparing? If you are referring to the Bose Sounddock 10 or the Bose Acoustic Wave Radio then I would argue Bose over Geneva speakers. The legacy of Geneva speakers are formidable. They have been in the studio and offer great insight into music, but the sound quality of the one's I have heard is lacking. Best I can put into words is the sound is arrested, held up, masked even muffled, it could be so much more, but it cannot. Geneva didn't give their best sonic effort to match their reputation, design and colors of the Geneva box. On the contrary, either Bose units provide a robust vibrant well rounded sound stage. The Bose Sounddock 10 does it best of the three. It is hundreds less out of pocket. My recommendation is to go listen to the Sounddock 10, be sure to turn it up, then turn it down, see what you hear. Best.

If you want your speakers to sound better but a 2 channel amp. A sub just match the watts of sub with watts of amp. Get a mono amp to run the sub. I recomend the sub Alpine Type R there really really good. I have one and LOVE IT!
