- Q:I have two upright Vacuum Cleaners, a 1997 Hoover Turbopower 2, and a 1979 Electrolux 502S, and was wondering how long the drive belts usually last ? On the Turbopower, I had to change the original belt about 3 months ago, as it was starting to slip, which means its belt lasted about 14 years. Is that normal ? Or was it incredibly lucky to last so long ?As for the Electrolux, it obviously doesn't have the original belt, and since I only got it 2 days ago, and didn't ask the previous owner when she last changed it, I have no idea how old it is, only that it still works fine.
- In an air conditioned house where you vacuum once a week a belt will last about 4 years. In a really hot and dry place like Phoenix it drops down to around 3 years, especially if you store your vacuum in the garage where it's easily 110 degrees with 9% humidity. I learned the hard way and now store my vacuum in the hall closet inside the house where it is 75 degrees and 27% humidity. It should last longer. Vacuums that were built 14 years ago used better components and the units lasted longer. The more modern ones are cheaper, designed to wear out faster and use thinner or less reliable components. The manufacturers want them to breakdown so you buy another new one or at least have to buy another, belt, filter, canister etc.

- For years, I always had Eureka. They are good, but 4 yrs ago, I bought an Oreck and I would not buy any other brand. It is lightweight, is great for allergens and it cleans well. I take it in for maintenance once a year. The first three or four years it is cost free for maintenance. I like the fact that it is self leveling when you go from hard surfaces to carpet. I recommend an Oreck. They may cost a bit more, (varies as to styles,) but to me they are well worth their price. I use my on tile, linoleum, parquet wood flooring, and carpet with ease and efficiency. I've never had my Oreck to kick out any dirt particles to the back of the vacuum as I have had with other uprights. I also have an Oreck cannister/with shoulder strap that is lightweight to use for cleaning upholstery, stairs, baseboards and ceiling fans etc.

- Never happen the dirt cup is way too small. You have to do it the old fashion way or hire a made!
