- You're saying you have a Hoover built in 1933? If so, you may as well try to sell it as an antique to some vac shop and try to find something that will actually work. The bearings in the motor on that machine are most likely not greaseable anyway. Most times vacuum bearings are sealed and are replaced not lubed. There will be no parts available for that machine.

- if your windows are open, try to keepthem closed as much as possible..especially when its windy..alot of dirt and dust comes in that way..you can use a broom to sweep the carpet, it doesnt work as well as a vacuum, but it will be able to pick up some of the bigger particles that are in the carpet...for area rugs take them outside and shake them..if you have pledge or furniture polish, you can use that with a rag to pick up dust off of smooth surfaces, if you dont, just use a damp rag.. and dont feel bad about your situation...everyone goes through hard times sometimes, we have all been there, strong families like yours are the kind that stay together forever and thrive..keep your head up, things will get better for you!

Hold out on making a quick sale to get your best deal. Many people are ripped off by door to door sales people who are desperate to make a sale. - There's not a whole lot to it. Follow the existing cord into the housing. Remove the screws that hold the housing together and pull the housing apart. You'll see that your white wires are typically wire-nutted together and your black wire from the cord will probably have a 1/4 female spade connector and is connected to the switch. The other wire on the switch runs to the motor. All you need to do is buy a replacement cord(assuming you can't just cut the bad part off the old cord) and route it in the same manner that the manufacturer did and make the connections just as they did.

- i would go with a Dyson I've heard good things about them. Or an Electrolux or a Kirby, both of which you can get used (as they usually cost a grand or more but are well worth the price new). I've had experiences with both of those before and they work like no other vacuum i've seen.
