- Q: Can you recycle steel? And if you wanted to buy some recycled steel, where would you get it?
- Steel is the most recycled material. But in recycling steel you would need the usual equipment in a foundry. The finished (recycled) product cannot be discerned visually. You cannot differ it from those coming from virgin steel ingots. The finished product (or steel material) would have to depend on your requirement, whether it is for structural, architectural or otherwise. For your requirement (enough to build a cruise ship), it would be best to go to a smelter. You might get better prices and quality compared to that from a scrap yard.
- Q: I asked a question last week about stainless steel and got some great answers. I combed all over the internet to try to figure this one out but could not find anything. What resists bending better: chrome vanadium steel (i.e. a steel commonly used to make tools) or stainless steel 304. My guess would be the chrome vanadium alloy but thats just a guess. Which on resist's bending better and by how much (#'s please :-)). Also, if anyone knows if chrome vanadium steel is cheaper than stainless steel 304 that would be awesome? I can't find a price per pound on chrome vanadium steel anywhere! Please help. Thanks in advance-Josh
- Type 304 stainless steel can be tempered to give tensile strength up to about 125,000 psi. There are many chrome vanadium alloys, and tempers, but they are generally very hard steels used for machine tools which are used to cut other steels. They generally are much stronger, and can be hardened up to tensile strengths of 250,000 psi and beyond. (Bending strength is proportional to tensile strength, but Cr-V steels are not usually used for beams or other structure members.) Cr-V steels are specialty alloys and will probably be a good bit more expensive per pound than common stainless alloys. For any steel, price depends on the form you are buying, i.e. plate, bar, or other shape, as well as the alloy and temper specified, and the quantity. You need to get prices from a supplier. You can find some online catalogs, but you usually have to call the vendor for price info.
- Q: So I'm trying to decide which is better. I've always had aluminum on my 6 yr old tb gelding as I do hunters on him. He's never had steel on but I've recently moved and the shoer here is more expensive. So is aluminum really worth the extra cash to keep him light on his feet or is steel really not that much different?
- It really depends on your horse. If you horse is a good mover, and average weight steel shoe shouldn't make much of a difference. If the horse is a mediocre mover, sometimes the added weight will make it move worse. You should also understand that one steel shoe is not like another steel shoe- they come in different widths of web and thickness of steel. Some horses that don't do well in regular shoes do better in a light rim shoe or training plate. Discuss your concerns with your farrier, but he/she doesn't have a crystal ball. You may just have to try steel for a cycle and see how your horse does. When I am shoeing a horse that needs lighter weight steel, I tend to use either St. Croix's Lite Rim shoe or steel Concord training plate, or Kerckaert's DR training plate or the Triumph Lite steel shoe. All of these shoes are light weight, have decent traction and good break over.

- Hi! You can hike in steel toed boots, but I wouldn't. They aren't designed for hiking, no matter what the manufacturers says. They're built to protect your feet from hazards on a job site. I bought my first pair of decent hiking boots for $10/month on layaway at an outfitters. It took forever, of course, but I didn't have the money to buy them right out. Until then, I hiked in a pair of tennis shoes. Sneakers are just fine as hiking gear, though remember that you will have no ankle support, so you need to be more careful on rocky trails. Use a pair you don't mind getting dirty and make sure they have decent ankle support. Also, this is a great time of year to buy boots if you can scrounge the money together.
