- Q: I have a bathtub that the bottom row of tiles are getting loose on the top portion. A few have come out.The row above seems ok.Can the bottom row be resealed or replaced without interfering with the upper tiles?If so how?

- Grinds that carbide right off the bit, doesn't it? One of the previous posts has one technique, that being, drill a small hole in the tile (carbide, diamond-tip) at a slow speed with some sort of lubricant such as water (also cools the bit, but don't electrocute yourself) on the tile. Then you would thread the carbide grit hacksaw blade through the hole and hook up a hacksaw frame and cut away - - slowly. Then the tile will usually break when you are almost done. There are tile hole saw blades made, but they are not cheap, as they wear out relatively quickly. They will work up to a few inch diameter size. If it's any bigger than that, you'll probably want to find someone with a water-jet machine, like a countertop fabricator - person. A water-jet cuts just like it sounds - with water. It'll cut stone up to several inches thick. Hope that helps

- If water can get behind them, it probably has. I suggest you take the tiles down ASAP. Water in a bathroom can cause MOLD. Depending on your state, if it is moldy back there you can hold the previous owner's responsible. Don't risk your health!

- yes, there are several things you can do with them. - use the scraps to cover an old table and now you have one that looks brand new - advertise them on Craig's list - you can use them to cover jars to make candle holders - i have seen some people use scraps of tile to make jewelry - put felt pads on the back of them and make coasters or a trivet - take broken pieces and attach them around the edge of a mirror these are just a few! I'll bet if you tried to get rid of them you would possibly find someone who might even pay you for the leftovers!
- Q: I‘m going to install a porcelain tile floor. My question is when I install a tile up against a cabinet that people can see. Should I but the tile up against the cabinet or should I leave enough space to grout between the tile and the cabinet. Just wondering what the standard practice is , and what looks the best. Also I have a small crack in the concrete, which the tile company said it was so minor that not to worry about it. Although it caused a crack in my old tile that was originally installed. - If at all possible remove the cabinet and tile under it this way you will have a new clean and level floor otherwise you are leaving a quarter inch drop off at the least for water,bacteria and mold to grow. As for the crack if you have a circular saw buy an in-expensive carborundum blade or mmasonryfor it then grove out the crack and use a hand chisel wherever you can't reach or use a hammer and mmasonrygouging chisel for the whole crack,diamond wheels on grinders work well also if you have one,then wire wheel or wire brush out the grove and vvacuumit thoroughly then put silicone in it to just below level then using your thin set mix enough to apply a thin layer to each side of the crack and level out the crack then use fiberglass drywall tape and possibly a geo grid type netting or vvinylscreening, if the slab is older and somewhat settled this is the only way without busting out the slab which is probably only 3 inch thick,and pouring a new 6 bag per yard high strength concreteon a vvibratortamped ssubstrate withvapor barriers.

- Always wipe off excess water after you bathe or shower. You can use a wash cloth and wipe off the water from the tiles. Buy a spray bottle and fill 90% water, 10% vinegar. Spray all the tiles in the shower/bath area with the water/vinegar once a week and let dry. The vinegar will not harm the grout or tiles and will eliminate mildew from growing. Bleach would be good for cleaning the tub but its not environmentally friendly. Try water/vinegar and steel wool to get the stains out. Then once a week water/vinegar and wipe clean.

You are looking at the cost of tile (at $1/sqft.), grout ($10 or less), permabase/durock ($9 per 3x5 sheet), mastic ($30 for high quality), and caulk ($4), to get the job done. On an average size shower, this will bring your total material bill in at right around $200. This is based on entirely ripping out your old shower walls (back to the studs), and building an entirely new shower. A complete rennovation for $200. This is what I do for a living, and I can honestly tell you that you will save tons if you are handy enough to do this yourself. One side note on the pre-fab showers (fiberglass, urethane, etc) - we get a lot of calls to come out and remove mold from these types of enclosures. On most that I've seen there are a lot of corners and small nooks that moisture gathers up and sits in. Just something to watch out for should you go that method. Good luck to you, either way.
