- Q:Ok the room is 12X16 thats 192 square foot right? well each box of tile is 30 square foot how many boxes would i need
- Allow 10% for waste. That would mean 192+19.2=211.2 211.2/30=7.04 boxes Buy 7.
- Q:The last people to live in my house decided to use black spray paint on the bathroom tiles and it looks awful (not to mention the fact that it is peeling and uneven as it wasn‘t done properly). However the tiles underneath are blue and white so I would like to keep them. What is the best way to remove the black paint without scratching the surface of the ceramic tiles?
- The best way to remove paint without ruining the tiles with scrape marks is to use a chemical stripper. Try a spot in an inconspicuous place. My only concern for you is that the grout might have absorbed the black paint so the black tinting may remain once the paint is removed from the tile. Your test spot will reveal the results and you can decide to follow through with the rest of the room or not. Sometimes you have to wonder what the hell goes through the minds of people when they decide to do home improvements. I
- Q:Looking to install ceramic tile over concrete basement slab, 12x12 or 13x13 tiles. Main question is how perfectly level/flat does the concrete need to be. If I put a tile down and there is some minor rocking is that no good or will the thinset adhesive take care of that.
- Any rocking means the tile is hitting either a high spot or there is a low spot. Low spots can be dealt with the thin set. As long as its less than a 1/4. High spots usually needs to be ground down flat. So to answer your question , for ease of installation and the prevention of cracked tiles at a later date, floors need to be as flat as possible. If you have minor rocking with no thin set down, in some cases a larger sized trowel will do the trick. Each case is different and has to be dealt with differently. - Q:Tile loss rate
- The loss depends on your room size and size of the tile size ratio ~ a home a sample how much you can calculate it ~ for example, your parents are 1 meter wide and 0.5 meters your tile is 300 # 400 by piece The brick can only cut 2 knife count your loss is greater than 50% of the ~ If you are talking about man-made loss that I can resolutely tell you is 0 occasionally broken one or two is normal and reasonable.
- Q:I want to install vinyl over a tile floor. What procedures should I take? What adhesive? What prep on the ceramic?
- You should definitely remove the tile as well as the underlayment for the tile. Screw down the subfloor to the floor joist so that the new floor doesn't squeak. Install vinyl underlayment, crack fill the joints and install your vinyl flooring. Be sure to pay attention to your threshold where the new floor meets the old floor at the door openings.
- Q:My wife noticed that our kitchen tile is made of a stone type substance not the traditional shiny type. well, i have to re grout the floor but now i also want to put a sealant on top of the whole floor. whats the best stuff and way? ty
- Tile Lab, Cerama Seal and Miracle 511 is the 3 main ones I ve used over the years with out a problem. Get one that is a penetrating sealer which can be used on grout as soon as 72 hrs after grouting. But if you truly have a stone and not a glazed product you ll want to seal the tiles before grouting and then 72 hrs after to seal the grout and then seal the grout twice, Any questions you can e mail me through my avatar and check my qualifications there. - Q:I was told by one guy at Menards to use a 1/4 teeth trowel for 6-1/2‘‘ x 1/4‘‘ floor tiles. I am worried this will be too much glue and will ooze out the 3/16‘‘ gaps between tiles. then it will be a nightmare mess, and can‘t grout. Also do you just lay the tiles on the glue? or press down ?how much?Thank you very much
- No matter how much mastic you use for tile it will come up in the grout joint areas because you have to press down and what I hve found easy and everyone is different is to have a bucket of water and use a spacer to clean the mastic out of the grout joints as you are laying them. After they are dried you can still clean out the grout joint areas which it not hard either. Hope this helps
- Q:We want to put the same sticky tile over the existing tile just stagger them. Will that be unstable or should we remove the old ones...which seems like work lol
- As long as the existing tile is not cracked, has missing chips, free from grease and dirt and has been vacuumed you won't have a problem putting new tile over it. Also you want to make sure the existing tile is not loose in spots. Yeah, a few new tiles might lose their grip and come up.....in about forty years. We did the same in 1974. I am now in the process of a remodel and a few of them came loose. Must have been a bad batch of tiles! Lol. You'll be fine.
- Q:We currently have vinly tile in our tiny kitchen. We want to upgrade but want something that looks nice and is easy to install. What would you recommend (not wood)? Also, would we have to take up the vinyl floor tiles or install on top of it?
- Without knowing exactly how you define upgrade; I suspect more vinyl wouldn't be. While some might enjoy hardwoods or laminates for a kitchen; I personally don't. After doing many various floors and installing multiple thousands of sq. ft. of tile and other substances; this is pretty much a choice you have to make. If you went with wood or laminate you might be OK leaving old flooring; though If I was contracted to do a job as such; I might turn it down. Most especially with vinyl tiles; I'd remove them or install concrete backer board/ a new sub floor over; removing any cove base molding to replace later. You'll get many various opinions here; and your options should be weighed using various factors. For one thing the kitchen; while it should be aesthetically pleasing; is pretty much a utilitarian room. Usual ceramic or Porcelain tile will last a lifetime with proper care; but will also be a cause for broken glasses or dishes if dropped. Certainly wood or laminates might as well. More Vinyl; be it sheet or tile would be an inexpensive way to go; and the patterns and colors are vast. Easy is a relative word; but I'd be happy to walk you through any substance and process. I like Pauls suggestion; and have samples of it; but I'm not sure of it's proven durability. Similarly I like Pergo; in a patchwork but again; it's a laminate. Actually the most durable wood flooring/ laminate I've found; is bamboo (no it doesn't look like stalks laid on the floor) You might also consider the rooms use in a general sense; how the balance of the room is decorated/accesorized; etc. Steven Wolf
- Q:I recently removed some old tile in my kitchen that was bound to the floor with adhesive. I‘d like to either remove the adhesive or make that area of the floor level in order to place some stick tile. What is the best solution for this? Do I need a sealant? Should I chip up the old adhesive and then seal the floor? Thanks!
- its probably easierto lay down a thin underlayment such as luan or you can get a glue remover which is lots of work a quarter or 8th in floor board is simplest
