if you have lived there 8 yrs and the carpet was there when you moved in all the wear and tear is as a result of you living and using it, it would appear you failed to keep the carpet in good condition, which would be part of your responsibility when renting it is not likely the landlord can even replace it until you move out, or you somehow move all your furniture so it can be replaced I had a tenant we needed to replace the carpet but there is no way I would ask the carpet layer to move ALL her furniture to lay down a carpet, she had a whole lot of furniture

Washing rugs can trap the dust into the fibers. What you need to do is find a way to release the dust. There are several types of rug chemical cleaners that can do that, which you can find at Home Depot. You should also hang your rug outside and whack it several times with a stick to remove any dust trapped in the pad, but make sure to stand so you don't end up covered with dust.Then get a vacuum with a strong suction capability and run it over it several times.

Q:I have a 5x7' area rug on my carpeted floor that moves an inch every time I walk across it. Use some little nails. Hammer them in through both carpets and into the sub floor. The tiny nail will not damage carpet. You'll never know they are there.

Carpet won't be glued onto the wood floors; rather it's tacked on. But if it's removed, the floor will show holes from the tacks. As a big fan of wood floors, I suggest you appreciate them and keep them---just use area rugs in the bedroom.
