- Q: The collar on the kit is supposed to poke a hole directly into the pipe, then feed water into the line that attaches to the fridge. I went to do this the other day and found that the pipe underneath the sink is made of silver mesh. (Braided?) So is that going to work? Or will putting the collar into the line going to make it leak?

- Q: Swagelok sells SWAK at $40 or more for an 8oz. tube. Then there's another brand, something like STALOCK or whatever it's called, and it runs for $68 for an 8oz. tube. On the other hand, you can buy a 16oz. bottle of RectorSeal 5 for $20-$30, and other PTFE dopes for less.So, how do you really evaluate which pipe dope will work for stainless? We had a horrifying time at one plant with 2 SS threaded fittings, seemed they all got galled and leaked. Any ideas? Can you really trust lower end pipe dope?

- sharkbite fittings seem to work well, but mine are only a year old. you MUST true up [square up] the end of the pipe to be fitted and clean it as well. If that's copper, the smallest pipe cutter that will fit works ok, followed by sandpaper and a clean rag. the salesman at the store will help you understand. btw, my neighbor had a bad experience with the competitor's similar product. Since he's an a/c technician, I know he did the square up and clean process well, so the issue is the fittings themselves. sharkbite fittings can not be used within 18 inches of the hot water tank [on the hot or outlet side]. see store for other restrictions, including pressure.

- They might make you retake it if you were out there for a long time, but a few minutes really won't mean anything. You teachers should have instructed you not to talk at all while outside. They might do an investigation, but I doubt they would make you retake it unless many people complained.

- The costs of the materials is easy to figure. If you use flex pipe then it should be about $20.00 for the flex pipe and then there are the fittings at $5.00 per end, and a valve if they can not reuse the old one. But you may be required by code to use black pipe, then both the labor and materials will be a bit more. Local building codes vary especially if you live in Chicago (stricter codes - unneeded by unions). Then you have the question of labor. Are you going with the joists or perpendicular to them?. The labor should not be more than a couple of hundred. But is this a part of the overall project or do you need to have a separate plumber come in for the job? It is more if not a part of the original estimate and a different contractor needs to be called in that was not scheduled. All in all you should be able to get this done for less than $300.00. It could be as cheap as $100.00 You have a lot of variables that come into play.
