nevermind what I think....the guy under me knows EXACTLY what he is talking about! Do it exactly like he says. His way is better than mine was, honestly, because he has more experience. Q:The application is a bathroom light and exhaust fan combination. The fixtures wires are thiner than the supply wires. Should I wrap the thinner wire around the thicker wire or should I wrap them equally around each other? Then can I put a drop of solder on before I put the wire nut. Or is solder not a good idea?

Q:I have this ipod cord in my car to play music off of, and at first it started cutting out. I would move the wire in a specific spot to a position to where it would work. Then eventually it just stopped working all together, so im assuming the wires inside have been damaged. Now as i said before in a specific spot so im pretty positive i know where it is broken at, but ive never actually spliced a wire, or soldered before. This is where i need help. What tools and materials will i need to fix the wire? Also, how would i fix it? Thanks for the help in advance!

The wires in those little patch cords and headphones and stuff are often very fine and hard to splice or solder. You could get you some wire cutters and wire strippers and a soldering iron and some electrical tape or shrink wrap and go at it, but it would probably be just as well to get another cord.

These are all probably hot-side wires. If you have the knowledge and the tools, find out which wire or wires is/are hot in the box with the switch off. If you have no idea what I am talking about, you REALLY need to find someone who knows electricity. BTW, the wires in the fan are quite simple to decode. The green wire is the ground and attaches to either the box or a ground wire in the box. The white wire is the neutral and attaches to the white wires in the box. The black is the hot lead for the fan and the blue is the hot lead for the light. These two can be combined if you have only one wall switch. Where they attach in the box will be determined by which hot lead is switched. I can probably guess how the box and switch are wired but I may be wrong and that would be dangerous. Call an electrician so you don't burn your house down.

The positive wire should be red and the ground black. You should tap into a wire that is ignition hot. Meaning it only has power when the ignition is on so it won't run down the battery. The easiest one to use would be the accessory port on the fuse panel. The ground needs to go to any good metal part. Find a screw that is in a large metal part, like the dash support, and wire it under the screw.

In recent years, much of the 12 gauge wire is being wrapped in yellow pvc, while the 14 gauge is still being wrapped in white. Side by side it's easier to tell. 12 is thicker and more difficult to work with, bend and such. Also, spools of wire have the gauge and other identifying characteristics laser printed on them at regular intervals.

Q:I bought this ceiling lamp, and there are 4 wires coming out of it. One white and one black (positive and negative), a bare copper wire for grounding, but there's also a yellow striped green wire. The yellow and green wire is another ground wire. In a house in North America most systems are AC and there is NO positive or negative conductor. The conductors are a ground/bare, white/neutral and any color is a hot wire. The green or yellow green are the exception to the color codes. I suggest you get a book on basic house wiring before you attempt anything besides basic replacement of devices.
