There isn't one phone I would recommend on the T-Mobile network as a very displeased T-Mobile costumer who has gone through MANY phones. I would recommend a Samsung Galaxy s3 on Sprint, or an iPhone 4s on Verizon as your best options.

Once the phone goes through a service provider however (such as T-mobile), they usually 'sim lock the phone. this is the service provider's way of protecting their investment on the phone unit. this means that should you decide to change sim cards, the old phone will only work if you get the sim card from the service provider that provided the phone in the first place. In your case, should you decide to use or give away your old phone, this will only work if the new sim card comes from T-mobile.
