Q: Is this a necessity? Will laminate flooring become damaged over time if an underlayment isn't used? The previous owner of this home installed a wood floor in the living room without an underlayment so if I want to use a flat transition between this floor and the floor I'm going to put in the next room I'll have to leave it out to keep the floors level. If I chose a cheap foam underlayment how thick will it be? Thanks.: by laminate i assume you mean an interlocking pre- finished wood or wood composite flooring. underlayment ( vapor barrier) is nearly always used when applying the flooring over a concrete slab surface. not so much as when it is applied on an elevated floor ( raised foundation) The purpose of the underlayment (which is usually plastic or foam) is to keep moisture (from Below) from permeating the flooring causing warpage and damage over time. any good floor installer will use an underlayment regardless. if your problem is with underlayment thickness at the very least you should lay down heavy gauge plastic as your vapor barrier. the foam underlayment is also effective , but was primarily designed for a quieter walking surface. hope this helps

Q: I purchased 6mm laminate floors for my home and I'm on a budget, can I use poly sheet vapor barrier and felt underlayment over my concrete floors or do I not even need both?: Boo, you don't want to use felt paper. The vapor barrier that is sold at flooring stores comes in different grade levels. The lowest grade (or thickness) runs about .27 cents per square foot. These products are specifically designed for this application and they are the best products to use. When you say poly sheet vapor barrier are you talking of just about regular poly (ie:plastic)? If you are forget that idea. Moisture will get trapped under the floor and eventually ruin it from the bottom up. Like most people that are budgeted on projects, you want to save where you can. This is not one of them.

Wood floors do not hold pet odors or smell during rainy days. So, wood floors are a better choice for a home with pets and even homes without them. You can easily warm up the decor if you elect to use an area rug over a wood floor or use a runner in high traffic areas.

Q: Can you have heated flooring for hardwood floors? Do heated floors have a higher risk of starting a fire, especially with wooden floors?: Heated flooring is also known as radiant heat. It works by pumping hot water through coiled pipes placed under your flooring. You can put it under wood floors but you have to make sure the wood isn't too thick. Because the heat works using hot water and pipes the risk of fire is minimal. I am posting a link for you.

Tear up all of the tile and remove all of the adhesive. Now if this is ceramic tile, you'll really have fun removing all of that thinset mortar. If it's vinyl, it'll still be plenty of hard work with floor scrapers/grinders. All the old adhesive has to come up -- all of it! Then you'll have to start with the staining and polishing process, which costs $3 per foot on a new construction job in Texas. Smaller jobs cost a whole lot more. Good luck!
