- Q:im trying to clean the floors in my living room, but i was told not to use water or anything like that because it could damage the wood. we have laminate pergo floors in the house, what is something safe to clean it with that will still work well?
- The thing to avoid is allowing water to stand on the floor for a long period of time. Water will soak into the seams of the boards and cause them to swell and delaminate. Damp mopping is fine, just don't soak the floor. Good cleaners to use are ammonia or vinegar in hot water. Home improvement stores sell special laminate cleaners but they are made of ammonia and water. No matter what two hundred people tell you, do not use Murphy's oil soap or any kind of oil, wax, or soap. They may look good at first but leave residue that will eventually make the floor very dull and filmy. Many people have trouble eliminating streaks when cleaning Pergo. The only way to get rid of all the streaks is to dry the floor after cleaning. Using very hot water also will aid in streak control.

- 1) obviously the quiet floor is best for doing work and sleeping with little trouble. However its easier to get into trouble if you decide to have a fun time in your room. 2) in college, you get really lucky if you have a well behaved floor, or even luckier if the floor above you is good. There will always be discrepancies with the cheerleaders upstairs yelling and stomping around and the jocks next door who drink a case every night. However! I would say that single sex floors (if you're a girl) are known to be kinda catty and not fun to be on. Women are mean, they talk behind each others back, and they do passive aggressive crap to one another instead of just coming out and trying to fix a problem. I would try to get floor that has both genders on it, that gets rid of some of the catty tension and guys are usually more fun to be around. 3) Most dorms and floors are the same on every campus with the exception of furniture and size. 4) I have lived in dorms before and it can be lots of fun. It can also be kinda crappy. It all depends on who you room with and who is rooming around you. I would say your best bet is a mixed gender dorm or floor. All dorms have quiet hours, they usually start around 10 p.m. and if you have a good RA you'll have no problems with annoying, loud, or rude roommates or floormates.

- Oh God NO!!!!!!! Don't ever practice on cement. You will destroy your knees , feet and joints. You need a sprung or floating floor to not get injured. The floor needs to have some give. Even a standard hardwood floor in a home will give you tendinitis if danced on for any helpful amount of time. That is why pre-professional dancers take daily classes over practice at home because 1) they don't want to be injured. 2) in class they get corrections from their teacher that they cannot get at home and 3) the cost of putting in a sprung or floating floor in your home is very expensive and you need the ceiling height to do this as well. Much cheaper and better to just add more ballet classes.
- Q:How do you remove excess vinyl flooring glue from the walking surface of a newly installed floor?
- You could try scraping it off with a scotch brite pad and some water. You could try a razor blade but try it without cutting the floor. Otherwise, you could try a solvent or mastic / glue removal. If it's fresh vinyl, you could easily mark up the vinyl. Make sure it's completely dry before removing the excess so you don't ruin it. - Concrete is a great base for tile. However, if you have areas where you patched new concrete next to old, it will crack at the joint. In this event, use a crack supression under the tile.
