Q:Which is cheaper, having my badly damaged oak floors patched and refinished by a professional or installing a pergo type floor over the existing flooring myself? I know the level of the floor will be raised up a bit. That's ok.: It would be better for the resale value of your home if you re-did the natural wood floors. If you do some research you might be surprised to see how much of the repair job you can do yourself, thus decreasing labor costs a lot. Pergo is okay, but will be damaged by water if there are leaks somewhere. Ours has been pretty well ruined by the dishwasher and air conditioner backing up. We had to tear up part of the living and all the dining room to find and replace some by the back door (the seal had worn and rain leaked in under the floor so we didn't know) that was mildewing underneath (and stinking!). Big time hassle. I'm thinking of going tile next time.

Q:My front door leads into my living room. The oak floor right infront of the door is so messed up. The rest of the floor is fine. How do I do a good sand/cleanup job on just this part????: No matter what, if you don't do the whole floor your going to see the difference. Stain or no stain, the floor has aged and the surface has darkened, I'm assuming this door is an outside entrance door. A couple ways I would do this is 1: Tape off a section, be it square, rectangular,1/2 octagon, hexagon, circle, Whatever, make it look like an entrance landing. Sand and finish it however you want. 2: Cost more $ but would solve future problems, Again have a shape in mind, lay it out and cut it out. If need use build that section up with an underpayment made for this purpose. Replace that area with some nice slate tiles, or whatever you like using a thin set mortar.You can buy nice trim for the surface change

Q:can you give me some tips so that new vinyl tile floor will adhere to old floor. new vinyl tiles are self stick type: clean the floor very well use a self leveling thin set and just skim the entire surface making a light coat be sure that it is even and thin let it dry completely use a large drywall taping knife (big putty knife) to spread it after its dry scrape any high spots and sweep it really good then make a chalk line at your center point spread a vinyl adhesive with the big putty knife barely leaving any and let that air dry until it has flashed over then begin to lay your lick and stick tiles pressing them firmly into place when you are done roll the entire floor with a 50 to 75 lbs roller this will set the tile into the pressure sensitive glue and you will have no problems any other way is the wrong way

Q:My bro bought a house and some of the floors are not even. (He got no basement.) What can he do to make the floors straight without investing too much money?: A good tile installer can use self leveling or pull mud if its radical.

Q:I want to use peel and stick flooring in my bathroom as a cheap alternative to costly renovations and wondering if anyone could tell me about the quality of them. Will the steam from the shower cause them to shift or will they still stay firmly in place?: They actually work pretty well. If you have any come up, just use tile glue and a weight to replace it.

Q:can i install over the top of existing vinyl flooring: You can but you need to be carefull make sure the old vinyl floor is secured down tightly other wise the new floor may come up. But I would strongly recommend ripping up the old floor and putting the new floor directly on the subfloor. I also recommend putting down a new subfloor if the old one looks bad.

Q:the floor has a small crack and is un level in all directions.: Depends on what type of flooring your going to end up with as far as final treatment. But you can level off most any flooring with a self leveling compound. The crack has to be treated specially if your doing ceramic tile of even vinyl. carpet for the most part you can go right over the crack once the flooring is leveled and made flat. Q:Ive been researching earthen floors. Im a little confused. Does this floor serve as the foundation as well as the floor or is it just an alternative to carpet and such?: A foundation is used to hold up walls and a roof. I`m sure you do not want the roof to fall upon you. A normal foundation used is concrete. Check with your local building department on what is required for foundations.
