Q: A question for electriciansi am getting a bachelors degree in entertainment technology. The apprenticeship program is closed but i would like to get a head start for the next go around. Should i go to school and get a masters in electrical engineering or should i become a grunt and get the experience? orwhat do you guys think? I know local 3 is hard to get intovery hard???
If I have been hiring an electrician, i'd sidestep every person with a posh enterprise call, and that i'd probable leaf by using telephone e book in alphabetical order, so i'd propose something like Abbey electric powered centers (except you're blessed with a time-honored or surname that comes early interior the alphabet).
Q: if my electrical equipment has a fuse; does that not mean it's protected?is it just the power grid that goes down?
A okorder
Q: I am using a piece of equipment that uses plastics hoses to connect three metal pieces (a vacuum pump, a separation chamber, and a rotating sieve). When I touch each of these to remove material I am collecting after use, I get a small shock. What can I do to prevent this? Also, there is a loose, partially exposed wire. What can I do about this? As far as I know, it has no function.
Is it static discharge or a 60Hz thing? If it's static discharge, it'll be a a very short jolt followed by nothing. In which case you can ground your body, like to a water pipe or something earth grounded, before touching it an you'll be fine. If the shock is a steady tingling, it's likely a 60Hz line voltage thing and it means your equipment isn't properly grounded. This can happen if a hot wire is touching the metal frame or enclosure of an appliance, like your equipment, and the frame isn't grounded. Ideally, any equipment with a metal enclosure should have that enclosure connected to earth ground, usually by the third prong of the power plug. I would get an ohm meter and measure the resistance between the third prong of the power plug and the frame/enclosure. It should be close to zero ohms. If it's not, make it so. Also check inside the equipment and make sure no hot wires(like that partially exposed wire) are accidentally touching the frame. In a three pronged power plug, one prong will be hot, the second ground, and the third is an extra safety path to ground. You can also use an ohmmeter to measure the resistance from the hot prong to the metal case of your equipment. Also make sure do this with the equipment unplugged :-)
Q: I just replaced a light fixture in an apartment complex.I discovered that the bonehead that did the install did not run an equiptment ground when he installed the entire circuit that the light is ran off of (dumb a**!!!!!!!!)Does anyone know if it would be up to code if I where to just drive an 8 ft. ground rod and ground the fixture/entire circuit off of the rod?I have looked everywhere.Cannot find anything in code books. If someone knows where this is in NEC, please include the location.Anybody have any input?
As mentioned the box may be grounded and you cannot see it. If it is not then you must ground it. There is code that will tell you the gauge of the wire that you must use for each circuit. The new code indicates that you do not use a ground rod, but a ground plate. That plate must be buried deep enough that it is in damp soil or it will not work. I am not familiar with the plates, but with the ground rods you need to have more than one and they have to be separated. I have attached a link to the city of Concord code.
Q: i dont understand this, every surge protector claims to protect phone lines from surges but why?
If a heavy piece of electrical equipment in the vicinity (even a block away) suffers a serious failure causing a massive power surge, it can cause an inductive surge down ANY nearby cables. Considering ALL cables are often run underground, and have to be parallel to reach the same places, this can mean extremely high voltage spikes on the telephone cables, or cable tv lines. Also if overhead cables are used, a lightning strike a long distance off can present dangerous spikes on the line into the building. In a few buildings I have worked at, I have actually received a shock from an unterminated pair of network cables which where connected at the furthest end for testing. In one case it measured 110v with 240v power cables in use. I actually ran a small 110v light from it and then had 90v across the lamp. Really surprised me.
Q: do mechanical engineers also get involved with electronics?
Engineering is usually a team sport. The mechanical engineer consults with the electrical engineer for the development of the product, then it gets reviewed for approval by the principal engineer.
Q: How long did it take you to complete? What job do you have now? I am interested in going to school for that and wondering what type of jobs I might have.
I am currently studying to be an electrical engineer. It takes on average 5 years to get a Bachelor's degree. However some schools offer yu the chance to also obtain your masters in 5 years (requires alot of extra work). Electrical engineers have a wide gambit of job options. Often they involve jobs with heavy analytical problem solving, you also will be very fluent in mathematics as you will probably be required to maintain an astute understanding of calculus and physics. My father was is/was and electrical engineer who fixed medical equipment at hospitals, a field engineer. You may also be hired for you ability to solve problems rather than technical skills. It all depends what ou want to do though. My major electrical engineering with a robotics focus, so there are alot of jobs for electrical engineers.
Q: Dose that means amount of joules of energy consumed in 1 sec or an hour.
a watt is how much power an electrical Appliance will draw. current x voltage will give you what power is required. e.g. if ur appliance runs at 230v and is rated for 10amps then it will be rated at 2300watts. This is what electric companies use to see how much to charge you as they will charge by the KWatt per hour. 1 watt 1 joule per second
Q: Hi, i have one question i'm would like to sell my computer (tower) on OKorder but i don't know the value of my system, it was a gift from my sister about a year ago. Here is my system specs:Black gaming case with red neon light insideAmd x2 3800+ 2.0ghz.2GB of Ram ddr2 667mhz.Asus m2n-e motherboard.Visiontek Hd 2600 pro 512MB ddr2 supports direct x10.Western Digital 160 GB sata hard drive with Vista ultimate.Pci firewire card 2 ports.Any Help will be appreciatedthanks.
Used electrical equipment is always a gamble for most people. Your system will be no different. You can look at the prices at many web sites and see what it is brand new, then figure that 60-75% of that would be your system used. So far, in my experiance, I would say that your system would be around the $400-$600 mark. Again, it is a ballpark figure and also depends on the demand, especially on OKorder. Good Luck
