The fuel lines are only so big, and it can't flow fuel any faster than that. There is a myth that machines take a LOT of energy to start up. Some people say it takes as much power to start your PC as it does to run it for 30 minutes. The same is often said of fluorescent lights. That is not true - it is essentially never true. It is used as an excuse to avoid shutting the thing down. Why can't they? Because the pipe or wire supplying the fuel/energy is only so big. If a PC took that much energy to start up, it would trip the circuit breaker. The energy also would have to go somewhere, and energy always goes away as heat. A massive surge of startup energy would be a massive surge of heat, which usually burns or explodes a thing. So no -- devices generally do NOT use massively more energy to start up than they do to stay running. Some times might have a startup surge of double, or perhaps triple - such as a hard drive or compressor spinning up. But nothing more than that, and only for an instant - too fast for most circuit breakers to trip.

Q:Hello, what I'm really trying to understand is how do large generators that power prisons, hospitals and various government buildings work? I have a basic understanding of regular house generators and their working process. What I want to know is how such a generator can acquire power in a case of a complete electric blackout, is there a back up supply line? another power source? Surely to supply a large building such as a prison or a hospital one would need a large reserve of power. So the question is where does that power come from? Or are they completely autonomous? Q:I have put together a 4 cylinder peugeot diesel and an 8 kw alternator.At first it was direct coupled to run at 1500 rpm but didn't have enough grunt when i struck an arc with my mig welder. I then put in a lay shaft the engine runs at 2275rpm alternator at 1500rpm. same problem engine allmost stalls under heavy load. At this speed the engine is producing max torque 70 lb ft the alt should only need 33 lb ft. pls help: The alt is what RPM you will set the engine atMost 120-240 volt are 50 HRX and run at 1800or 3600 so if it's the 3600 back end your using the wrong engineUnless you use a pulley and belt to get the correct RPMMY 8K Diesel marine ONAN direct drive 3cyc runs at 1800 Rpm If your over loading the genset than no engine will workwhat is the load your pulling as 8K is 80 amps Max single 240V or 40 amp double 120V

Some generators need to be used at a minimum percentage of rated load to operate properly and reliably. Caterpillar have a section that deals in generators. Because of the remoteness reliability would no doubt be an issue. Go for a known name brand.

Q:i could only find a weight on one website and it said around 8,000 lbs. This one is rusted out and were planning on taking it in for scrap normally we would cut it up and take it in but this thing is a monster im thinking about renting a flatbed if it is 8,000 it would be worth it. I would call a scrapyard first to get an idea of what they are paying, especially because part of it is a diesel engine and there are guidelines with some yards how they will accept machinery, such as clear of any fluids. The copper or aluminum wires and generator cores will probably be most valuable parts and might be worth removing and forgetting the rest depending on what the scrap yard says about the engine and rusted steel shell is worth. It will be a hard move, even for a flatbed truck because the little winch will have to pull that generator which is super heavy and dead weight. Final thing to look into is whether there is any value in any part of it. This is a very popular size generator and is still produced today except with Cummins diesel engine, maybe someone has an older one with same engine and their block is cracked!?
