Q:I currently have a cheap ceramic tile on my bathroom floor. It is set on cement board. I would like to replace it with a slate-like porcelain tile. Can I simply remove the ceramic tile or do I have to also tear out the cement board and replace it? How big of a project is this? I previously installed porcelain tile on a plywood floor over cement board and am wondering if the demolition creates a bigger problem.

Yes you can reinstall on the cement board. Just be careful not to damage it when removing the old tile. If you do it is fairly easy to lay down a new layer of cement board. If you are capable of installing tile, then you are capable of putting in the cement board.

Q:Hello, my husband and myself are remodeling our bathroom....here's the question... we removed hideous vinyle tiles and underneath is the cement floor with thin layer of black adhesive from the tiles....the floor is pretty sound except for a small crack in cement by the entry door.... should we fix the crack and tile over the cement? or thin set 1/4''cement fiber board to the floor and tile over that? and if we do use the fiber board is the thin set enough to hold it down? we can't really screw/nail it cuz subfloor is cement. Im not for certain but i don't think it can be used instead of cement backer board. Plywood is very preamble and the grout may soak through? I would call a Lowe's or Home Depot and ask for the flooring dept. or lumber and ask them.

if using a hardi board then u do not need to treat it with a water seal before or after hanging as it is made of cement, but u will need to use a mesh tape and a morter type mix to tape the joints and corners of the cement board ( just like doing drywall ) to stop any water from passing through those spots

Q:I'm removing a tile floor and planning to install a hardwood floor instead. I found cement backer board under the tile. Do I need to remove the cement backer board? Or can I install the hardwood on top of that?

if it was my house i would remove cement board and replace with wood to accept nails, if it is a floating floor you can keep it, just put tar paper doon before floating floor
