- Q: hi i started a tile job yesterday. i was supposed to pull up the old linoleum tile and put new linoleum yile. the only problem was that the ols tile had been put over older tile without being pulled up. so i chipped away a little at a time and it just seemed like it took a long long time. i have blisters all over my right fingers and hand. i still have a big patch to finish tonight, and if anyone knows how to get this stuff up faster please let me know, thank you
- You can go to a rental store and get a machine that will take all that up for you. You walk behind it and the blades will rip up the remaining tile. It's big and bulky so you will need something to haul it home. This would save you more blisters but will cost you a little bit money. If it is old tile, then you need to be sure you're not working with asbestos. Hopefully you've had a sample tested.

- Q: I am looking to tile my livingroom/kitchen area appx 500sf. I am going with porcelain due to the strength ( i was told its better). My question is for resal (4-5 years) what is a better tile to lay; polished tile or regular glaze. I like the shiny clear coat look the polished has but someone mentioned it picks up footprints and it is not good for resale.Also, I was thinking that If I went with a larger tile, 18X18 or larger that it would look much cleaner with less grout lines, but since its only an area of 500sf that it would make my place look smaller than it is?any suggestions are helpful. - Porcelain can absolutely be a polished surface. Mechanically polished porcelain does need a sealer applied before a contrasting color of grout is used. The surface is a polished unglazed and needs to be sealed. Shiny glazed tile, whether ceramic or porcelain is an enamel glaze in a shiny finish. Totally different than polished, through body porcelain. Don t believe everything you hear.
- Q: In my Bathroom, I want to update the tile. It‘s the small rough octagon shape in white w/black speckles. Grout is also white. I hate it, stays dirty. Thought about sanding it and putting a dye and sealer on it, but I dont know if this can be done. 2nd choice is replacing the grout w/black but I am back with the white tile, does anyone know if the sanding and dyeing it would work? I thought I would try this first, it would be cheap, because I have a sander and I can do it myself.. and thought I could maybe use the dye you use to dye clothes (possible?) and then just a polyurthane to seal. If I do anything else like, remove ceramic tile, this may be costly..Any suggestions?
- There are special cleaners for cleaning that type of tile and bringing it back up to white. The problem is that this type of tile is pourous and over the years its absorbed the dirt and water from use so it may not come clean and sanding it will not help as its gotten down into the stoneware. At that point, you will have no other choice but to rip it out and replace it all. If it does come up clean with a cleaner, you must seal it or it will dirty again quickly. Do not use polyurethane as it will yellow and look like poo.
- Q: Or can I just start tiling over the painted wall?
- I can't believe I, as the lone female answering, am going to have the right answer. Yes, you need backerboard. Simply put, you are tiling. Have you ever lifted a box of those tiles? And can you imagine one of them on that wall? Now, how about 10 of those boxes? You see, you are putting up tile and tile cement and tile group, all very heavy items, onto what may well be simple sheetrock. Yes, you need backerboard. Specifically, you want cement board, which is specifically designed to be used with tile and be waterproof. You see, in your zest to prove you can do it, you may well have a moisture issue come from an overlooked mistake in the tiling. Maybe it's the caulk at the tub seal, maybe it's in a corner, maybe it comes from an awkward merging of two tiles. Whichever it may be, you want a waterproof surface which will stay intact from such an issue ... sheetrock, no matter how nicely painted prior, simply won't do that. Yes, you need cement board. Ask anybody at your local home center if you doubt me ... and I, as the lone female, will now bid adieu.

- Q: I was cleaning a house today, and I accidentally dropped a few drops of bleach on a earth colored ceramic tile. The lady wants me to fix it, but the local carpet cleaners/tile guys want to charge me too much. Is there a way to repaint the tile? Or to strip away the bleach?
- Tell us what the tile is made out of, it's obviously not a ceramic tile (bleach has no effect on ceramic tile other than to clean it). ------------------ Read the edit. A real Saltillo tile is a glazed tile. Bleach would have no effect except to clean it. She has knock off, crap tiles and it isn't your fault. There is no way to strip away bleach. What's done is done. She bought junk, she installed junk, and she got junk results. Tell her to go to hell.

- There are re-glazing products out there, or professionals who'll do it for you. You find them usually advertised for re-doing tubs, but you can use it on tile too. It's not a true reglazing in that it is still paint, but it's durable enough as long as you stay away from abrasive cleaners. If you do it yourself, make sure you do the following: Clean/scrape all the tile surface and grout lines. Repair lose/damaged tiles. Touch up all the grout to perfection -- let cure. Sand tile; completely and thoroughly clean off dust. Cover/tape off all edges/areas not to be glazed, including any hardware, trim, etc that can't be removed. THEN apply primer, let cure, and then paint. Don't underestimate the power of using quality tools. If you get a professional, the results are almost always better, since they use a sprayer (protecting everything that isn't to be sprayed). It really depends on your area and how much tile you're talking about, but professionally reglazing a tub usually runs around $300, to give you an idea. Call around though.

- Kitchen floors tend to get water on them. Wood warps when it is exposed to constant water over time. I would go with tile, it holds up and is easier to take care of.
