Q:According to the Home Depot book I should NOT install on top of existing vinyl tiles but according to the Lowes website I can if it is smooth and in good condition(which it is). It would be easier to install on top but I would like to do it the way that is the best.
Yes,You can. I have installed hundreds of them. As long as you have a smooth even surface under the new floor your fine. Make sure you glue down any lose ends or corners that may be sticking up now on the floor you want to tile over. There are 2 options..You can put a very, very light skim coat of floor adhesive over the old floor..(In the main traffic areas) let it tack up for 30-40 mins. then lay the tile. Or you can just go with what adhesive is on the back of the tile. I always put a very light skim coat of glue down cuz i don't want to hear the tile pop on different spots where the tile adhesive from the back of the tile didn't adhere to the floor. Make sure you have a can of mineral spirits if you use the floor adhesive. This cleans the glue that may come up between the tiles. Just make sure you use a plastic throw away trowel and use the SMALL TOOTHED edge and lay it on THIN!!. Last but not least...always start with a full tile in the doorway and work you way into the kitchen, bathroom, foyer areas. DON'T line the tile up with the existing tile!!! Make sure when you lay the new tile over the old tile..your first piece should cover two tiles. The tiles are 12 x12..make a 6 in. mark in the middle. Then when you lay your first tile..make sure that mark lines up where both tiles meet that your going to cover. I hope that doesn't confuse you. Good luck.
Q:are linulium tiles long lasting? how can I replace.
OMFG. Why don't you asking an intersting question.
Q:I have never tiled before. I have a 3 x3 ft entrance in my house. I would like to remove the old tile and re tile it. How long should this take? and can I just tile over the old tile or does it have to be removed? but mostly how long should it take me to do?
If you have the height for tile at the door and any thresholds and the substrate is sound, You should be able to tile over tile with a super modified thinset. Not the kind you buy at Home Depot or Lowe's!! It would take you about 2-3 hours to tile such a small area and then the next day 1 hour to grout it. But as the other gentlemen said, It would be cheaper and faster if you called a pro like him or myself! We would really have to see what you have down under the tile to make a dissension on the course of action, its time and cost!
Q:Is Tumble stones tiles a good selection for a kitchen backsplash and if so how often does it need to be sealed?
Perfect choice...seal once a year
Q:I will be making a 36 x 36 hearthboard for my gas fireplace stove out of slate tile. Do I need to space them and use grout in between or can I just cement them down next to each other like you would glue down vinyl tiles?
sure, the adhesive will carry without the grout. Down the line the tiles will be extra problematical to get the mould/bathe crud out because the perimeters of the tile are not completely sq.. Grout makes the interest seem professional. Grout is available in distinct colorations yet gray is the guideline. remember to seal the tiles if the tile producer states so.
Q:Tiles of choice, how to see the quality of tiles is good or bad
The simplest is the knock, listen to crisp loud and better, with the porcelain similar; can also try the water, take a one-time cups pouring water on the tiles, the more slowly the better description of the better texture
Q:I am having glass tile installed. It is in a high use area...backsplash with lots of good cooking going on...should it be sealed, and if so by what kind of sealer. The glass tile is frosted. Thanks.
If it weren't for the grout joints, you wouldn't have to apply sealer to the area. Grease and oil splatter from frying will not soak into the glass tiles, but it will soak into the grout joints. Eventually, the grout joints will become discolored and impossible to clean. For that reason, it is a good idea to apply sealer to the area. Keep in mind that you will have to thoroughly clean the area, especially the grout joints, every couple of years and reapply a new coat of sealer. Good luck with your new glass tile backsplash.
Q:Small size tiles for external walls
45 * 45mm, 45 * 95mm, 45 * 195mm, 100 * 100mm, 100 * 200mm, 110 * 250mm, 140 * 280mm Tiles, including 100mm * 100mm150mm * 150mm two or so super 200mm should be called tiles 10CM * 10CM, (a lot of specifications) mainly look at what you personally like the specifications.
Q:best way to install floor 12inch by 12 inch floor tile
First you decide if you want a seam or a row of tiles in the middle. Make sure the floor is clean and without divots (fill in any holes). Drop a chalk line down the center of the room and lay a row of tiles dry (no stick) along the line to see how they look. You don't want one end to leave a sliver and the other end to leave almost a full tile - try to balance the ends that have to be cut. Now dry-lay a perpendicular row from the center to check the ends going across the room. Lay a full tile or its edge down on the chalk line. This first tile will be used to orient all your tiles so make sure you're satisfied with the placement. Then lay a whole permanent row of full tiles down the center. Now you have to decide if you want the tiles layed side by side or brick wall pattern. Next lay the perpendicular row down permanently. Now all you have to do is fill in the quadrants as far as you can go with full tiles. After all your full tiles are down, it's the cut ones that remain. Slide a full tile in place up to the wall and mark where you have to cut. Peel and stick tiles usually can be cut with a sheetrock knife and a metal straight edge or a good pair of shears. Some of the cuts can be tricky - I can't see them so you'll have to muddle through.
Q:If I start in the middle, I will have to cut tile for both sides. I think I should start in the upper right corner, but my neighbor seems to think it will look out of balance.
Start in the middle. That's where the eye naturally strays. The edges, or corners will blend in. Yes, you may have to trim the pieces on the edges, but, it will be balanced from the center out. Good Luck!
