- You do not get a SOFA card. The SOFA is the Status of Forces Agreement. That is the equivalent of a treaty where the host country agrees to defer legal matters to be handled by say...the U.S. for U.S. personnel. What you need is an immigration visa. You have to get the packet together and submit it through the U.S. Consulate (Embassy) in your particular region. There is one in Frankfurt, Berlin and I think Munich, but I am not sure about that one. I was married to a British woman, and had to get the ducks in a row before she could come to the U.S. She eventually became a dual citizen. I lived in Germany for 6 years while assigned in the U.S. Army there. Being that your spouse is from a former Soviet Bloc country, there may be an additional hurdle too, but once again, talk to the Consulate about that. - Going to Japan without Command Sponsorship is a very bad idea. First of all you will be staying on a tourist visa and the most time you will get is 90 days. You won't be able to work legally.No you can't get a SOFA stamp until your Command Sponsored. Living in Japan is extremely expensive. Where would you live while awaiting sponsorship ? Evan a fleabag hotel cost upwards of $150 a night and then there is the issue of food. Renting evan a modest house costs $2,500 a month plus figure in at least $400 a month for utilities. Bottom line is unless you have a huge amount of savings, no way will what your planning work out. It will take 1-2 months after your married to complete the requirements for Command Sponsorship.

- I liked this answer I came across: The couch/sofa example is different, I think. It's true that there are many ways of framing the semantic (or at least pragmatic) difference between couch and sofa (e.g. a sofa seats 4 and a couch 3), but I sense a consensus is emerging at least around here (the Midwest) in which sofa is defined as a nicer / fancier couch. This is easily confirmed by the fact that furniture stores only advertise sofas. I've never seen a couch advertised (except in the classifieds) even by the low-end furniture retailers. Seems to make sense to me. Oh, sofa comes from suffa in Arabic -- and a divan has no back, just cushions against the wall, but sofas usually do have backs, but do not necessarily have beds in them, those are sleeper-sofas.

- Did you check La-Z-Boy? They have all different styles. I bought reclining chairs that dont even look like recliners - they have wooden feet and no lever. I buy all my chairs and sofas from them, because they are so durable.

- Q:I have an ikea klippan sofa, and i'm getting the 'natural' cover for it. My other sofa is an ikea ektorp, and the only new cover i can afford for this is the white one.
