Q: How do you upholster a sofa, what items are needed, how much fabric should I buy? Or am I better off buying a slipcover, but they never seem to fit right.: Upholstering is a very hard job and you are right about slip covers. You can buy fabric and cover over the upholstery that's already there. You can use fabric tape and some fabric glue and a staple gun. Cover the cushions to start then use the fabric tape to hold it in place. Then cover the arms and such and staple it underneath the sofa on the wooden frame. I DO NOT recommend this on a good sofa, but if it's something that you got at a yard sale, have fun.

I have a decent sized family room (14x14) and I'm considering a sectional in the middle of the room instead of against walls (which is more traditional). They do it on the design shows all the time but I'm curious if there are particular guidelines or rules...: Just so you know, most exterior doors today are 36 wide, meaning actually about a 34 opening, if it is going through that door only. Most interior doors are only 32, leaving only about 30 opening. So it depends on your doors and which room you plan on putting it in. Older homes have much skinnier openings, and were not set up for a straight shot, often having foyers or turns, limiting access. These are just the average norm, as I've seen a 42 inch wide door in a 120 yr old home as well. I personally like sectionals rather than separate couch/love-seat combos, but preference varies from person to person.

Q: I am looking to buy a dark green (like darker aligator green) sofa and I can not find what I want. Initially I ordered one from Flexsteel only to find out (7 weeks later) they aren't filling the order due to a problem w/ the leather. I would like it to be overstuffed and comfy since it will be in our primary living area. I'd be thrilled if you have any ideas!: Oh Gawd, come and take my boyfriend's away!! When I met him, everything this man owned was dark green. His car, his sofa, his towels, his shower curtain, his throw rugs, his kitchen pot holders, his table cloth, his comforter!! I am slowly getting rid of all the green, but the sofa still stands. I must say it is durable and oh so comfortable, though. Try Raymore and Flanagan's, Bob's Furniture or Puritan Furniture. If these stores are in your area, I would try there first. You could probably get one at Ethan Allen if you leave them with your first born child (expensive furniture). The good thing about dark green is that you can decorate circles around dark green as it matches just about any other color.
