Q: So I customized my guitar, and now I need to wire it. i have a pre-wired pickguard but I don't know how to actually hook it up. There's 3 wires. The 2nd and 3rd discussions were good but didn't discuss magnetism. The 1st guy: an open circuit has infinite resistance. Even a straight piece of wire has some self-inductance (or self-magnetism). One affect of inductance is that it opposes changes in current. So when you first apply a dc voltage across a wire and a dc current starts to flow, the self-inductance will resist the increase in current. It will appear to be because of higher resistance than expected. But the current will increase over a short time, and once it gets to a steady-state, the apparent resistance from the self-inductance is zero. This, self-inductance in a straight piece of wire, is a minor affect compared to components that presumably are in the circuit. After the current reaches steady state, the self-inductance will try to oppose a decrease in current. If the voltage and therefore the current are ac - alternating, this gets more complicated. The current is always trying to change. At the level of study I think you are, you should save this for later.

You can do this a number of ways. All of the postive terminals must be connected in some way and all of the commons must be connected in some way. This doesn't mean you have to connect each positive to every other postive, and likewise for the common. You have a few options: You can solder two wires to the positive terminal of the battery and run one wire to each load (device). You can solder one wire to the positive terminal of the battery, run this wire to the first load (device), solder another wire to the first load (device), connect this wire to the second load(device). You can solder one wire to the positive terminal to the battery, run this wire to the second load, solder an additional wire to the second load, and run the second wire to the first load. In industry, power wires are typically jumped from one device to the next to delivery power to each device that needs it. Basically, your power needs to go to each one. How you connect them is up to you.

Q: I just purchased a Pyle Audio aftermarket radio. The wiring is very different actually. It only has 2 single speaker wires (1for each side). So do I hook up multiple wires to one wire or what? Wow. I haven't seen a car stereo with that style of wiring in 20 years. Their is no manual online so I am going to assume that it is setup the same as stereos made in the 1980's. You are correct, both left speaker positives go to the left channel wire and the same for the right side. All four speaker negatives go to the ground wire. That means a total of six wires being connected together ( ground from stereo, ground from car, four speaker negatives ).and the red goes to full time battery power. The pics I have seen do not show a yellow memory wire, so you will have to remember to turn the stereo off when you get out of the car. Or it will play til it runs the battery down. Also, you didn't say what kind of car you have, but if it's a modern car with fuel injection and a ECM, I would bet you are going to have ignition noise problems. It's one of the many reasons people stopped using common ground car stereos.
