- Q: How to convert kVA (kilo-volt Ampere) to kg/h (kilogram per hour) for diesel generator set (genset)? I want to know the relation about the energy produced (kVA) to the fuel that used (kg/h) in the genset, either it used more diesel fuel or not. i.e the kVA amount produced is 106kVA and the rpm is 1500rpm
- Man, your question is really cryptic. I assume that you are trying to relate kg/h (kilogram per hour) of (maybe fuel) into the engine with kVA (kilo-volt amperes) out of a generator that it may run. There is no conversion factor. But there are some rules of thumb that some can make, based on the size and service of the engine. But you did not provide even that scant information, either.
- Q: I have read Wikipedia as to why Diesel Fuel can cost so much so please don't send me any links. Just want your opinion or 1st hand knowledge. My understanding is that Diesel is supposed to be the lowest cost fuel to make. but it costs the most. Why???
- Yeah, I think since it is in higher demand, the cost goes up. It's my understanding that diesel is easier to make than gasoline. Back in the 70's it was cheaper than gasoline. But since a lot of vehicles use diesel, the cost goes up because the market will support it. Still, gallon for gallon, diesel gives better milage. But it stinks.

- With a permanent magnet DC motor (like from a battery powered toy) this will work fine. An AC motor is less likely to work, in normal operation the magnetic field that makes an AC motor work is produced by the electricity going into it, so if no power is going into it there is no magnetic filed to make it act as a generator, actually there might be a little stray magnetism or there are methods of getting it started with a pulse of external power, but the PM DC motor will be easiest . In short,yes you can use a motor for a generator but not just any motor
- Q: China Diesel older generator. Hasn't been used for years, however, supposedly started biannually. Someone messed with the wiring. rewired much of the controls and all meters appear to be working. Have 240V no load, when applying a load to one leg, the 120V drops to 0V. Suspect the exciter not working. located the the 4 Stator cables and 2 smaller wires coming from generator. Suspect the 2 smaller are the excitation wires. According to the poorly edited Chinese to English manual. I have no idea which is F+ or F- and how important will it be to get this correct when applying the 12V as suggested in the trouble shooting guide??
- If you are seeing a voltage with no load, there is at least some residual magnetism in the field. Flashing the field probably wouldn't make any difference. I'd look for an open field winding or bad regulator if your machine uses brushes. If your machine is brushless, check for an open exciter winding, bad regulator, shorted or open diodes in the rotating field or open windings in the rotating field. There's a good chance that you can find decent troubleshooting advice for your generator on the smokstak forum. Fieldlines is another good resource. Don
