- Quick fix: Febreeze. Won't clean it, but will hide the smell. Real fix: Clean with rag water then wash the whole rug in a (large) cold cycle with Woolite--NO dryer tho... hang it on a line somewhere. (Usually they're ok to wash; check for a tag on the rug that actually says it's ok first.) Also, don't overload your washer or you may break the washer. - A true pad won t really work since it ll bunch up,make it to thick and cause a tripping hazard.. What you should use is a special mat made just for rugs over hardwood. This type allows the rug to stay it place w/o slipping and bunch up, allows the wood to properly breathe and not stain the wood . These are bought any where wood and flooring are sold, just get the kind made for rugs over wood. Since you know your rug size you can get the closest size to your rug. - Q: We are going to replace our flooring in the basement, it has very expensive cushony white carpet, and over the years with kids and dogs, it no longer looks white. Our basement is just under 1000 sq ft, and don't really feel like ripping all the carpet up. Its a very warm, dry basement, no dampness or leaks. Your carpet is something thats going to be there for some time, I like taking a bold stance by picking a vibrant color, but this is a color your going to have to live with for some time. I like red, red goes well with grey, black is nice too, dark but nice. I feel if you go grey your going to feel like your room is small, and boring. Beige is ok, but it has to be the right color of beige. What about hardwood flooring, they are universal, and the color goes with anything, if you don't have hardwood flooring under your carpet, what about stained concrete, I don't know what your working with, so I'm just throwing ideas out.
