- If you are trying to join a copper pipe to a PVC pipe, you will need a transition. There are several ways to make the transition. It depends on your skill level and the access to various parts. The easiest way is to find a plumbing store (even Lowe's or Home Depot) that carries manufactured transitional fittings. The inside diameter will not matter, just the actually pipe size and material. If you can't find these kind of fittings, you can either sweat a female adapter onto the copper and then use a PVC male adapter or you could use the same concept with a compression fitting for the copper side. - Jargon.. MPT or FPT by PVC Slip adapters. MPT is Male pipe Threads, FPT is Female pipe threads. And slip is the PVC fitting end that is glued. They are call adapters, and come in all pipe sizes. For drainage and so forth there are many slip and coupling adapters that have draw bands and so forth. But if you need a fitting that needs to be under lots of pressure then you need the Threaded by slip Fittings. Speak with your supplier for the best adaptor for you particular application.

NFPA 58 is the code book for gas piping although a state may or may not adopt it, or as it seems to be the case in California, may exceed what it says. Your inspector would know this and can provide you the code. Let me look up the code. Here it is 6.19 LP-Gas Systems in Buildings 6.19.2 Additional Requirements 6.19.2.4 Piping shall comply with Section 5.9 and shall have a pressure rating of 250 psig (1.7 MPag). 5.9 Piping (Including Hose), Fittings, and Valves 5.9.3 Pipe and Tubing 5.9.3.1 Pipe shall be wrought iron or steel (black or galvanized), brass, copper, polyamide, or polyethlene. Keep in mind that not all these pipes are for indoor use. ie: Polyamide and Polyethlene: 6.9.4.1 Polyethylene and polyamide pipe, tubing, and fittings shall be installed outdoors and underground only.
