- Q:Would a maxtor 320GB external hard drive work without a power cable if I connect it to the USB port?
- Yes you need a power supply for all 3.5 inch drives. The laptop drives on the other hand will power off USB. Is this a SATA or ESATA drive? You can buy an enclosure for the SATA for around 35.00 and 70.00 + for a good ESATA enclosure. The cheaper ones do not work to well with the ESATA. If it's EIDE then you can get one off OKorder for around 12.00. Good luck.

- I realize that your just starting out, But the worse mistake you made was buying a guitar on line, OK here is the truth, Once you get the guitar you are going to HAVE to take it in to a shop and have it setup So it will play,Action has to be set. will have to be tuned the first time, this is going to be about sixty bucks, Plus you are going to have to buy a instrument cable, Which is also at a music shop,A decent cord, is going to be 20 bucks,I have been playign38 years , have and still play on stage about every other wknd.Have went through alot of gear over the years.Twice i bought on line.both times I was screwed.Never buy before you play,Never,never.But putting that aside, Welcome aboard, always nice to hear someone else wanting to learn.all the Guys below gave you great advice, I,m just telling you the truth.Since your just beginning you will have no idea about setup. - Hi Allotted, The best thing to do is cut into the wall and run the cables down the inside. By the time you have power, DVD/VCR, cable connection and a dozen other things you have a huge bundle of cables. Cut a opening behind the TV and run the wires down the inside to the floor. Make an opening to bring them out there. I did mine like that and while it took some effort the results were a great looking installation. Norm

- You are correct. Power cables will always have 4 or more separated wires going into a plug. Data cables have all of their internal wires inside a single sheath.
- Q:Welding cable (230v) doesn't, so why would (14v) car audio cables
- Voltage is not your main enemy when dealing with electricity. It's current or amps that are the main concern. You can think of it like a water hose, the V is the speed of the water, the A is the amount. Take Ohm's law for example. Say we have an amp that's producing 1000W With a 230V power system we have 4.3A, with a 14V power system we have 71A. That's a lot of amperage. Car power cables have a thick jacket to prevent shorts, shorts are bad. If you had a large cable going from one end of your car to the other, without a fuse. (lot's of people don't fuse correctly) If that cable comes in contact with the metal of the car it's going to short and that whole cable is going to get red hot and burn your car to the ground.

- Bad wiring in the house? Sounds at least like a situation like that. Not uncommon in buildings of certain times.. older types of wiring used. And worse not ready for todays amount of electronics. So yeah check the wiring. In between time buy a few extension boxes, you know the type with more then 1 electronic socket. But most important a switch. That way you can switch it off and that way such discharges won't happen any more.
