For some reason, they must be set so that the screen will be dimmed when the laptp is running on the cord. You actually want the settings to dim the display when on battery. Right click onthe battery/power icon on the lower right side of your screen. Select Power Options or something like that if your running XP and adjust the settings when on AC.
